Easy to Knit Scarf with Pockets

The principal of the scarf with pockets is simple: you knit an extra-long scarf, then fold the bottom up by about 10 inches on both sides to create pockets. So here are the instructions for this easy to knit scarf with pockets.

#1. Buy Yarn

I knitted the scarf from inexpensive medium worsted sold in large 198 gram skeins, but you can make the pocket scarf with any yarn you like. With the super-saver pack I used a little over one pack, using US number 8 knitting needles. I chose black because I wanted my scarf with pockets to be elegant, something to wear on cool days when I don't have a jacket.

#2. Cast On

For the medium worsted I cast on 40 stiches, but you can change this number depending on your yarn and the width of pocket scarf you wish to make. Just make sure to choose a number that can be evenly divided by 4.

#3. Knit the Scarf with Pockets

Start knitting 4 knit stiches followed by 4 purl stitches and so on until you finish the row. Continue the entire pocket scarf. It might seem confusing at first, but if you pay attention to the way the yarn behaves as you knit, the yarn itself will guide your hand to make a purl or knit stich. In fact, I made this easy to knit scarf with pockets watching TV in the dark at night.

Tip: As you knit the pocket scarf it will seem to scrunch into itself and really be half as wide as it should be. Don't worry. Later, you'll iron and press it open.

#4. Plan for the Pockets

I wanted the pockets to be deep so I knitted an additional 10 inches on each side. I recommend measuring the pocket scarf on yourself to make sure that the pockets will sit in the right place. Just fold the scarf up by about 10 inches and see where it ends on your body.

#5. Cast Off and Sew the Pockets

Now the process of knitting a scarf with pockets gets really fun. After you cast off, sew the pockets with a sewing needle and the same yarn. All you have to do is fold the scarf ends up. Just make sure that both sides of the pocket scarf end up with identically sized pockets.

#6. Press the Scarf

Place the finished scarf with pockets on an ironing board. Try to spread the scarf open (at this point it will be scrunching inwardly because of the knit and purl pattern). Lay a wet kitchen towel over the scarf. Heat an iron on maximum and lay it over the wet towel. Wear long sleeves to protect yourself from the rising steam. And wear shoes too-after all you'll be using an electrical appliances in conjunction with water.

#7. Finish

After you finish pressing one area of the pocket scarf, move the towel and keep pressing until you finish. And that's it-your easy to knit scarf with pockets will be ready to make its fashion debut.
