Love the look of monograms but hate spending too much on customized home accessories? Consider creating your own with this easy monogrammed knife block project! This design also makes a great wedding, holiday, hostess, or housewarming gift.
For This Project, You Will Need:
- One wooden knife block
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other type of soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in a color of your choice
- Four to five inch vinyl monogram sticker
- Popsicle stick
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Begin this easy monogrammed knife block project by first covering your work area with a few sheets of newspaper and/or a large drop cloth to prevent excess mess. Gently sand down the outside of the wooden knife block with a sheet of medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe down the outside of the knife block with a tack cloth or other soft cloth to remove as much grit and/or dust as possible.
Spray the entire knife block with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the wood set for an hour or so, until the primed surface is completely dry. Evenly apply two to five coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in a color of your choice. (The exact number of coats of spray paint needed will be determined by the color selected and the tone you wish the finished project to have.) Dry completely.
Very carefully remove the paper backing from a four to five inch vinyl monogram sticker. Carefully adhere the sticker to the front of the painted wooden knife block. Smooth the sticker with a popsicle stick to remove any wrinkling and/or bubbling. Enjoy your new creation!
NOTE: Inexpensive wooden knife blocks can be found in many home supply stores, including Target, Walmart, Bed Bath Beyond, etc. You can also check local thrift stores, consignment stores, and yard sales to find the perfect design. Vinyl monogram stickers are available in craft supply shops and at online retailers, such as Etsy and eBay.
TIP: For best results, choose a vinyl sticker color that coordinates with the spray paint color used. Also, instead of using a vinyl sticker, feel free to use a monogram style stencil and a Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen to fill in the design.
