Easy Mosaic Christmas Crafts for Kids

Mosaic art is created by placing small pieces of colorful material close together to form a pattern or design. It is most common to use broken pieces of glass or ceramic in mosaic art. But, you can use any colorful material, including paper. Here are some simple Christmas mosaic crafts that are easy and safe for kids to make.

Mosaic Star Christmas Tree

Print a simple Christmas tree shape onto a piece of green card stock. You can use this Christmas tree template if you like. Do not cut the tree out. Stick little star stickers (the kind of stars you find in the school supplies) all over the tree. Arrange the stars so the tips interlock, yet do not quite touch (it's okay if this is not perfect). Let the stars go over the edge of the Christmas tree outline. When the tree is completely filled with colorful stars, cut along the outline. Punch a hole in the top to hang the tree if you like.

Mosaic Felt Christmas Stocking

Cut a simple Christmas stocking shape through two layers of felt. You can use this stocking template if you like. Glue or stitch the edges of the stocking together, leaving the top of the stocking open so the stocking can be filled with goodies. Then cut scraps of felt into little bits and pieces using triangle shapes. Glue the felt pieces all over the Christmas stocking to create whatever mosaic design you choose.

Mosaic Paper Ornaments

Cut colorful magazine pages into small pieces using triangle shapes. Cover entire pieces of card stock or paper plates with the pieces by gluing them on. After the glue has dried, cut simple shapes, like circles or triangles, out of two layers of the mosaic paper. Place a cotton ball between the two pieces of paper and secure all around the edges with glue, tape or staples (the cotton ball makes the ornament a bit puffy). Punch a hole at the top so you can hang the ornament.

Mosaic Pony Bead Christmas Vase

Buy plastic pony beads in the kids craft section of any store (they are inexpensive beads kids use to make jewelry). Buy lots of red and green beads for a traditional Christmas look. Using a hot glue gun, glue the beads all over a vase or jar in whatever mosaic design you like. When the vase if fully covered, you can add more hot glue between the beads to act as grout.
