Easy Ninja Halloween Costume Ideas

Jennifer Claerr
Ninja costumes are cool. They're easy to make, too. Dressing up as a ninja on Halloween works well for both children and adults. Here are some ideas for easy ninja costumes that are sure to please.

Ninja Costumes for Men and Boys

To make a simple homemade ninja Halloween costume for a man or a boy, you'll need a long sleeved T-shirt and a pair of sweat pants in masculine a color such as black, red or blue. Preferably, the sweatpants should be tapered or gathered at the ankle. Get some fabric in a color that matches your ninja costume. Cut it into two three-foot square pieces. Tie one piece of fabric around your head to create the ninja hood, and tie the other one over your face to make the ninja mask. You can also easily make your ninja hood out of a T-shirt that matches the color of your costume. Place your head through the neck opening of the T-shirt and tie the sleeves behind your head. Pull up the bottom of the T-shirt and tie it behind your head, allowing the bottom edge of the T-shirt to cover your face like a ninja mask. Wear soft black shoes. Tie a matching sash around your waist to make your ninja Halloween costume complete.

Ninja Costumes for Women and Girls

Women and girls can incorporate fashion colors into their ninja Halloween costumes. Find a silk or satin robe in a color such as black, pink or white. Sew on shiny fabric trim in a different color. For example, if your ninja robe is black, trim it with pink, red or blue fabric. If your robe is pink, trim it with black or white fabric. Cut out an emblem such as a dragon or a phoenix and sew it onto the robe. If you like, you can also purchase an iron-on transfer for your ninja costume. Wrap a sash around your head and another around your waist. Wear leggings in black or in a color that matches your robe. If you prefer, you could wrap two cloths or a T-shirt around your head to make a ninja hood and mask as in the men's and boys' ninja Halloween costume. Wear ballet slippers, boots or pumps that match your costume.

Making a Homemade Ninja Sword

Indy Mogul's Eric Beck has provided us with a great way to make weapons such as a cheap and easy ninja sword or katana using cardboard and poster board. Get two slender wooden dowels that are about 1/2 inch thick by 4 feet long. Bind them together using cloth tape. Cut a large piece of poster board into a 3 foot by 4 inch rectangle. Fold the poster board piece in half. Trim the poster board near the folded edge until it resembles a katana sword with a slight angle at the end of the blade. Place the poster board over the wooden dowels and attach it with cloth tape. Place the blade of the ninja sword over newspaper and spray paint it silver. Cut out four pieces of corrugated cardboard to 12 inches long and 3 to 4 inches wide. Attach them to the end of the wooden dowels with duct tape to create the ninja sword handle. To make your katana look more authentic, rap the handle with black fabric, cord or twine.
