For the easy no-sew hat craft, you will need:
Old sweatshirt
Long sleeved T-shirt
Scissors
String, yarn, or strip of cut cloth (For Optional hat craft step #6)
How to make easy no-sew hat craft step #1: Preparation:
Make sure the T-shirt and sweatshirt sleeves will work in the hat craft. It's easy, simply put on the shirt so your head goes into the sleeve. If the sleeve is too narrow, it will not work well. If the sleeves are too wide, take a tuck in the seam. If the sweatshirt sleeve is good but the T-shirt sleeve is too wide, it won't matter much as the t-shirt sleeve will be inside the hat craft. The T-shirt and sweatshirt should be in colors that match or contrast well.
How to make easy no-sew hat craft step #2: Obtaining the T-shirt sleeves:
Make the long sleeved T-shirt into a sleeveless T-shirt in order to obtain the T-shirt sleeve for the inner lining of the easy no sew hat craft. For instructions on how to make the sleeveless shirt, you can refer to my previous article; Turn your T-shirt into a sleeveless T-shirt. It's easy and well worth the time to make the sleeveless shirt right, so the sleeveless shirt remains useful. You can even use a newer long sleeved T-shirt for the hat craft without having to worry about wasting the T-shirt. Cut the sleeves off the T-shirt and set the T-shirt aside.
How to make easy no-sew hat craft step #3: Obtaining the sweatshirt sleeves:
Cut the sleeves off of the sweatshirt. Cut the sweatshirt sleeve off just outside the seam, leaving the seam on the sweatshirt. If the sweatshirt has raglan hems, use the sleeveless T-shirt as a guide on where to cut the sweatshirt. Set the sweatshirt aside, you can recycle the sweatshirt later. There are three easy projects you can make the leftover sweatshirt into. For these sweatshirt projects, you can reference my articles on making an informal sweatshirt vest, making durable reusable grocery bags , and making a pillowcase from an unused T-shirt. The pillowcase method for T-shirts works very well for sweatshirts.
How to make easy no-sew hat craft step #4: Completing the basic sleeve hat craft:
Turn the T-shirt sleeve inside out and place it over your head. Then place the sweatshirt sleeve over your head and pull it down until it is comfortable. The seam lines of the sleeves should be in the front. That way, the hat craft fits most comfortably. Fold the cut end of the sleeves outwards and over itself to hide the cut edges. Reach up and inside the cuff of the sweatshirt sleeve and pull the T-shirt sleeve cuff until it is flush with the sweatshirt sleeve. You now have a completed sleeve hat craft. (See first hat craft image)
How to make easy no-sew hat craft step #5: Adding the Pompom look. (Optional.)
Fold the cuff over itself outwards in order to add a contrasting pompom to the hat craft. Refer to the second hat craft image. One small fold can make a big difference!
How to make easy no sew hat craft step #6: Ditching the Santa look. (Optional.)
In this final hat craft step, you will fold the cuff outwards over itself until it reaches your head, eliminating the ponytail of the hat craft. Tie a piece of string, yarn, or cloth around the top to gather up the hat. Then tuck the string under the pompom of the hat craft and the hat craft is complete. Refer to third image.
Now you know how to make easy no sew hats, you can begin to collect shirtsleeves of sweatshirts and long sleeved T-shirts of different colors. Whenever you want to alternate the colors, disassemble the hat craft and reassemble using a different sleeve. Orange and black works for Halloween, red and green are perfect for Christmas, and the other color combinations are pretty much endless.
