Easy Outer Space Christmas Star Ornament

Ann Siper
I love this simple and easy to make star ornament. It really does look like something form outer space! So, if you are redecorating a retro Christmas tree from the 1950's or making a special Christmas tree in you child's bedroom with an outer space theme, you just have to make this simple and inexpensive Christmas tree ornament.

To Make an Outer Space Star Ornament You Will Need:
· Styrofoam ball (any size you want)
· Toothpicks and Wooden Skewers
· Spray paint in silver or gold
· Glue (white glue or hot glue and gun)
· Silver or gold ribbon (thin)
· 1 or 2 straight pens
· Glitter

Now, go ahead and have the kid's break off some of the toothpicks and wooden skewers at a bunch of different lengths. The wooden skewers will all be way too long, so they can all be broken.

Now, start poking holes in to the Styrofoam ball with the toothpicks and broken wooden skewers. As you pull the toothpick out, ad some glue to the end and then reinsert it into the hole you just made.

Continue this process covering the entire Styrofoam ball with pointy toothpicks and skewers.

White glue will work fine to hold the toothpicks in, but the hot glue will dry a lot faster.
Now, let the glue dry completely.

Take the ball filled with toothpicks outside. Lay out some newspaper on the ground. Use your silver or gold spray paint to paint on a coat or two of glittery paint to make you star really shine.

This simple outer space star design really reminds me of those great retro clocks from the 1950's that looked like a sun.
Now, let the paint dry, you may need two coats to really cover the Styrofoam ball.

Now, you can paint on some white glue thinned down with water on to the Christmas star ornament. Roll the ornament in the glitter. This is optional.

Once this has dried, you need to add a ribbon to hang the ornament onto the tree with.

I like to use a ribbon that matches the star ornament. You could also use ribbon that matches your Christmas tree though.
Now, just cut off an 8 - 10 inch piece of ribbon. Place both ends on the Styrofoam ball. Push one to two straight pins into the ends of the ribbon. This will hold you loop in place and allow you to hang the star on your Christmas tree.

You can make this retro star in a large size, with a larger Styrofoam ball. Then leave a one inch or so area without any toothpicks or wooden skewers. Use a knife to carve a hole in the ball. Then you can insert it onto the top of your Christmas tree as a Star topper.
