Easy Paper Craft for Kids: How to Make Paper Mosaic Handmade Cards

Detailed Instructions for This Simple Paper Mosaic Craft for Kids

David Farrell
Here is a great paper mosaic craft both kids and adults will love. Paper mosaic handmade cards are simple and don't take long to make. Handmade cards can be made in less than half an hour and will dry in a few hours. The handmade cards can easily be made up to the day before the occasion.

For this kids' or adults' paper mosaic craft, you will need:

Construction paper

Scissors

Glue

This paper mosaic handmade cards craft is best for kids age five and up. Younger kids can also do this craft with help from their parents. In these craft instructions, I will detail a specific variant of the craft, which has a paper mosaic on the outside and a space inside the handmade cards in which to write a message. You and the kids can feel free to construct different variants of this kids craft.

How to Make Paper Mosaic Handmade Cards, Kids Craft Step #1: Fold the sheet of construction paper down the middle like a card folds. Start out with a black or dark blue sheet for the outside of the handmade card and another sheet in a lighter color for the inside of the handmade card. Fold the inside sheet in the same manner as the outside sheet.

How to Make Paper Mosaic Handmade Cards, Kids Craft Step #2: With the handmade card folded in half, cut the corners of the top of the handmade card to attain either the rooftop shape depicted in the photo or a rounded top like an arching stained glass window. Then glue both sheets together so that when folded, the outside covers of the handmade card are dark and the inside is light-colored.

How to Make Paper Mosaic Handmade Cards, Kids Craft Step #3: Using the scissors, cut strips of construction paper that are a quarter inch wide. Cut these strips into rectangles that are a quarter inch wide by half an inch long. It is OK to make a few and repeat this craft step when you need more paper mosaic rather than make too much paper mosaic. Younger kids may need supervision or assistance on this craft step.

How to Make Paper Mosaic Handmade Cards, Kids Craft Step #4: Make a thin line of glue across part of the edge of the handmade card, then place some paper mosaic pieces on the glue. Continue until all the edges on the handmade card have a paper mosaic border. You can make a similar border of paper mosaic on the inside of the handmade card as well. Should you make a border along the fold, it is better to make two separate borders of paper mosaic than one border along the fold, so the paper mosaic doesn't flake off. Then, using pieces of different colored paper mosaic, you can make whatever craft designs you desire.

The handmade card craft pictured has a Good Friday theme, but you can make whatever craft theme you desire. For Christmas, you and your kids can make a tree and a candy cane. For Valentine's Day, you and your kids can make a heart and a rose. Easter can be a cross, a bunny, or an egg. A flag will work for Memorial Day or the fourth of July. Fireworks are a lot of fun to make for the fourth of July as well. Pumpkins, ghosts, and the like work for Halloween and Turkey, squash, and pumpkins work for Thanksgiving. A birthday cake and a wrapped present work for a birthday card. These are just a few paper mosaic craft ideas that you and your kids can make.

Now all you have to do is let the paper mosaic craft dry and write the message on the inside of the handmade card. You and your kids now have a unique paper mosaic handmade card for whatever occasion you need it for.

Talking about flashback from childhood; I made this as a kid and it held up all these almost 20 years :)

I love doing things like this with the kids - a nice flashback from childhood, too. Thanks! And I just bought a fresh package of construction paper earlier today. This will be our first project from that package. Thanks! :-)
