Not all necklaces need to be a string of pearls or diamonds; they can be wooden beads or even plastic, and still be elegant. Take a look at the picture above. This is my favorite cameo style pendant, but can you tell if it has real gems? It is still very elegant and wears nicely. The chain for it broke many years ago, so I just recycle my favorite chains between pendants. That is another wonderful thing about a pendant; you can have a favorite chain necklace and use it for many different pendants.
There are two ways you can wear a pendant; on a chain or on a cord. Both can have chains long enough to pull over your head so you do not need to worry about small clasps. To make a simple pendant, follow these easy steps:
Supplies from your local craft or jewelry supply store:
One large pendant (like the one in the picture)
Black Round Elastic, roughly 20 inches or
Black Suede Necklace Cord
Oval Jump Ring (optional)
All you need to do is string the cord through the pendant and tie the end (if it is the cord.) One thing to keep in mind when making your own necklaces and pendants; to keep it simple, make sure the top ring of the pendant is sideways. (Again, reference the picture.) If it is not, and it is like this one Blue Shield Pendant, then you will need to attach an Oval Jump Ring to link the cord to the pendant so it lays flat.
Pendants can be made by kids and adults of all ages and are great gifts and are a lot less expensive to make than to purchase. Also, if you make your gifts, you have enough money to make two for the price of purchasing one.
Pendants are great with just about any outfit. A large pendant looks great with a low cut blouse and can be worn with a turtle neck, too. Pendants are very versatile and can be worn in any season with just about any outfit. One word of caution with small children; pendants can not only be a strangulation hazard, but a choking hazard as well. The pendant might be large enough to not go in their mouth, but the cord can choke them when they are playing. Kids can help make them, but keep an eye on the age group to let them wear them.
There you are; great ideas to make your own pendants and also how to display your new works of art.
