Easy and Safe Home Remedy Cough Syrup

With so many recalls on over the counter children's medications and the ban on medicines for any child under the age of four, what is a parent to do when their child is coughing and sick? With cold season in full bloom and children and adults coughing all over the place, you or someone you love is bound to catch cold soon. Why spend tons of money on a cough medicine or leave your child with little to no relief due to their age? Many alternative home remedies include ingredients that you are not sure of or do not have on hand. Here, I have a surefire and easy remedy to calm that pesky cough in a child or adult with no medications and no side effects.

Take a leftover candy cane and break it into little pieces. You can also use peppermint candies or any peppermint flavoring. Put the candy pieces into a mug and add 1 cup of pure lemon juice. Heat this in the microwave until the candy is dissolved. Add 2 tablespoons of honey and stir well. Let the mixture cool. Take a spoonful as needed to soothe your sore throat and help stop that cough.

This remedy works due to the properties of each of the ingredients. The honey coats and soothes your throat, the lemon delivers vitamin C to help fight infection and the peppermint delivers a great taste as well as hastening healing in the sore areas. Do not use this remedy on children under one year as the honey can increase the risk of contracting botulism. Otherwise, this remedy is good for anyone of any age. Children will not fight this as hard as they do other medications due to the sweetness of the candy and honey.

If you look at the cost of a bottle of cough syrup, this remedy is much cheaper. The lack of any chemicals or medications makes it safe for almost anyone. And, there is no chance of overdose or side effects. For adults, adding a bit of whiskey can be an added bonus! Add this to a cup of tea for taste as well. This is a remedy that my mother used when I was a child and that I have used with my own children to good effect. No home remedy is a cure all. Remember that if your cough lasts longer than a week or two or does not seem to be getting any better, you should see a doctor.
