Easy Seating Designs for Small Living Areas

A Small Space Can Still Make a Big Impact!

Mrs.Gossett
Decorating a small space can seem like a daunting task. There are however, several ways to embrace the space you are working with and still end up with your dream home. With a slew of articles floating around about how to make a room seem bigger, I am a big fan of working with what you have......and loving it!

GO FOR IMPACT!
Think about what you want this space to "say". Your home is a reflection of you. You want to focus on what will be taking place in this room. If you have guests over, a bold conversation piece is a great idea. You want to be bold and proud of your choices. A large, gorgeous painting for instance will make a small wall have a large impact. You can go with neutral furniture and the exception of one wild print chair. If you put in your personality, people will notice that more than the size.

STAY AWAY FROM THE WALLS
You want to think, intimate and cozy. Maximizing the pro's of a small space will bring you and your guests more pleasure than being conventional. If you group your seating in a design to face each other, it will encourage conversation. This is an excellent way to transform "small" into "comforting."

CONSIDER STACKABLE SEATING
You can always use stackable stools or chic chairs that can be brought into the space in the event of a big crowd coming to visit. If you use them often, you can stack them in a corner. If you just want to keep them around in case of, you can always keep them out of the way by storing them in a closet.

PURCHASE MULTIPLE USE PIECES
Instead of a tradition coffee table, you could buy some of the ottomans that slide open to create a coffee table. Benches that are used for storage are also great double uppers.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DOWNSIZE
Always keep in mind that you can prioritize your bigger pieces of furniture. A big sectional is nice, but if you are a writer (or work from home), a nice sized desk would take priority. You could probably make it by with a sofa or love seat. If you have a lot of guests, or have a large family, you would need to think more about seating options. A little planning before running out and simply buying things that catch your eye can make such a difference.

USE WALL SPACE AND SAVE FLOOR SPACE
Now is the time to go out and purchase that flat screen T.V. you have had your eyes on. This will save a ton of floor room, allowing you more space for seating. Also, putting your cabinets and storage units in another room is a good idea to save space. For items that you would like to stay in the living room, consider wall units and shelving.

With a little creativity, you will find yourself loving your small space. Stay true to your decorating loves and downsize areas that you may need to. This will allow for a streamlined, yet cozy space to enjoy with your friends and family!
