The infinity scarf, a loop scarf with no free ends, is a popular fashion trend, but can be costly. Fortunately it's easy to sew your own infinity scarf, even for a novice seamstress. This infinity scarf pattern uses jersey knit, which does not fray. It's created with trendy raw edges and can be made by a beginning sewer in less than an hour. Choose your favorite knit fabric solids and patterns and make your own wardrobe of infinity scarves for less than $5 each.

Infinity Scarf Materials

¾ yard midweight jersey knit
Matching thread
Scissors
Ruler
Chalk
Sewing machine with ballpoint needle

Cutting Out the Infinity Scarf

Prewash and tumble dry the fabric to prevent later shrinkage. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, matching selvages. Using ruler and chalk, mark a straight line from fold to selvage, 12" from the raw edge. Mark a second straight line parallel to and 12" from the first line. Draw a perpendicular line 18" from the fold line. Cut along all fold lines. You will have two pieces of fabric 12" wide and 36" long. These pieces will make up the infinity scarf body.

Sewing the Infinity Scarf

Before sewing, make sure the sewing machine is fitted with a ballpoint needle. These needles are better for sewing knits without causing snags or runs. Overlap the ends of the two pieces. Stitch the pieces together using a wide zig-zag stitch.

Using safety pins, pin the free ends together and try the scarf on. Adjust the overlap as needed to give the desired length for your body frame. Try draping the infinity scarf with two and three loops to choose your favorite look.

Once you've finalized the desired length, complete the infinity scarf loop by overlapping the two free ends and stitching them together. Be careful when sewing not to stretch the knit too much. Also make sure that the scarf material is not twisted. Trim the edges close to the stitch line. The infinity scarf is complete and ready to wear!

Infinity Scarf Variations to Sew Your Own Closet Full!

For a colorful sports team-inspired infinity scarf, use two colors of jersey. Cut the strips 36" long and 7" wide. Sew two different colored strips together lengthwise before joining the larger strips.

Add smocking or gathering detail in three or four places along the length of the scarf for another on-trend look.

For a fringed infinity scarf, cut the fabric 18" wide and sew as above. After sewing, cut one edge of the scarf into ½" wide strips, going 9" into the width of the scarf. Knot the ends of the strips if desired, or add beads.
