Costs
Installing a new shower head is a pretty inexpensive job. The basic shower heads are very cheap but the fancy ones can be a little expensive. Prices for a showerhead can vary from less than $5 to more than $100 depending upon their designs. The difference in price does not indicate how good the water stream will be. The price difference is affected by the features like finishing of the showerhead and the material from which it is made. You can buy an average brass or chrome showerhead for around $20.
Types of Showerheads
Showerheads come with two main types: fixed and handheld. Fixed showerheads are permanently mounted to the wall of your shower but the handheld showerheads hang to the wall-mounted hook so that the unit can be held in hand.
Fixed Showerhead
The fixed shower heads are usually mounted into the wall of the bathroom. The fixed showerheads usually come with an extension arm that allows swiveling the shower head so that it can be adjusted to any height and direction. Using the idea of fixed showerheads you could also use the sunflower shower head. Sunflower showerheads are about 8-inches or more in diameter and create a rainfall-like flow. They are more stylish than the traditional fixed showerheads.
Handheld Showerhead
The handheld shower heads are more convenient than the fixed ones; they perform many functions including the ones of fixed showerheads. One is that you can direct the flow of water in any direction. Since the handheld shower heads are close to ones body, they provide extra water pressure which helps rinsing off in a better way. The handheld showerheads are also cost effective, you can spray water exactly where desired which results in less water consumption. Also since the distance of the body to the showerhead is less, the water stays warm until it reaches the body.
This concludes that the hand held showerheads are better in both cost and convenience than the fixed ones.
Shower Installation
Installing a shower head is not the hardest of jobs. It concludes with a few simple steps. All you need is the right tools to remove the existing showerhead and replace it with a new one.
Step 1
The first step is to remove the old shower head which can sometimes be done even by hand, but since it is an old used piece of metal, it can be tricky doing it by hand, therefore a strap wrench can be required to remove the old showerhead. The more appropriate way to remove the existing showerhead is the use of two wrenches. One wrench used to hold the stem in place and other to unscrew the old showerhead.
Step 2
Seal the connection among the stem and showerhead by wrapping the threads on the shower arm with pipe-wrap tape.
Step 3
Place the new showerhead in place and tighten it using a wrench. Do not over tighten the showerhead when screwing it into place.
That's all there is to it. Your new shower head should now be installed and ready for use. Enjoy!
