Easy Simple Ways to Soothe a Fussy Baby

Sarah Rachel
Some babies are just naturally fussier than others, and many people believe that it can due to several factors such as colic, birth experience, parenting style, or even personality. Although I practice attachment parenting with both of my boys, and yet my first born was considerably more fussy than my second born as a baby. My first born son was very fussy and he still is a high need child even at 2 years old. Yet my second born son has always been easy going, laid back and easy to please from the beginning. He is very mellow and quiet, and not demanding at all. In fact the little guy seems to be very patient because he will often wait for me to get to him without fuss at all.

However, after talking with other mothers including my sister and sister in law I have found that most babies are more on the fussy side.

Ways to Calm your Infant

1). Breastfeeding. Fussy babies tend to love being at the breast because it provides them with comfort and food. Some breastfed babies do get colic, but being at the breast helps them to cope with it better.

2). Baby slings. I love my baby sling because it helps me to be able to get things done around the house while also soothing my baby. I have used the same sling for both babies and my first son needed to be in it a lot during the first few months of life. For some reason he needed to be constantly reminded that I was there for him. He loved to be held close to me and the motion also helped to soothe him.

3). Baby swings. Not all babies will like a baby swing, but if you have a fussy baby its worth a try. You may be able to get a break now and then by putting your little one in a swing. Just don't over do it though, babies benefit far more from being with their parents.

*Dr. Sears recommends the baby Amby which has been shown to help babies sleep better because it's more like the womb. Check it out.

4). Baby Massage- Learning baby massage can also be very beneficial both for the parents and for the baby. Human beings need to be touched and babies thrive on touch. Learning how to gently massage your baby can help them to feel more at peace.

5). Relieve Colic- You can help to relieve colic by using gripe water or other products for colic. Check out my article titled Products to Help with Colic.

A great book about how to soothe a fussy baby is called The Fussy Baby Book by Dr. Sears.
