Common sewage systems are protected from kitchen oils and fats entering into them by grease traps. But these traps need to be regularly maintained to enable them to carry out their functions properly and learning how to clean a grease trap can prevent problems, such as blockages, from occurring. As well as blockages that can be caused by lard solidifying, a layer of scum can cover a tank and eventually damage the environment. It is for this reason that a filter to grease a trap was introduced to avoid such problems within the sewage system.
Waste water that could contain grease or fat runs to a main sewer system by means of a pipe but the trap is connected to the pipe before it enters the sewage. The function of the trap is to separate the grease from the waste water and, over a period of time, the fat and grease can build up preventing the trap from effectively performing its required task. It is for this reason that it is important to learn how to clean a grease trap. If a trap fails to perform its tasks, the outcome could be that fats might enter into the sewage system resulting in either a costly fine or foul smells being experienced.
Grease traps are made from a variety of materials such as iron, stainless steel, concrete and a number of other materials. They are generally reasonably accessible and cleaning is not difficult but essential. The process would start by removing the cover carefully so as not to cause damage to the gasket. The layer of scum should be removed and placed in a number of plastic garbage bags. The baffles should then be removed and cleaned in warm soapy water. Any sediment lying in the bottom of the trap should be cleared and the strainer cleaned out.
This is the easy and most fundamental way in knowing how to clean a grease trap but what must be remembered is that all parts should be replaced exactly as they came apart; failure to do this could result in ongoing problems. If the task is too much for the average person then a professional company could be employed but this would incur a fee so learning how to clean a grease trap could be a money saver as well.
