R. Bourne, Ph.D.

I am starting a new set of articles. You will learn easily the basic of spanish. This article briefly explains the Spanish number system. It will teach how to count in spanish both orally and in writing.

Numbers in Spanish

The Spanish number system is very simple. The numbers 1-15 have unique names. Learning the numbers from 1-15 is the first step. Here are the first 15 numbers in spanish:

cero - 0

uno - 1

dos - 2

tres - 3

cuatro - 4

cinco - 5

seis - 6

siete - 7

ocho - 8

nueve - 9

diez - 10

once - 11

doce - 12

trece - 13

catorce - 14

quince - 15

Practice them. Once you have learned the first 15 numbers you are ready to try higher numbers.

En espaƱol, numbers after 15, that is from 16 to infinity, are formed by expressing them as a multiple of ten and adding a number from 1-9, connecting them with y , which means and. For numbers expressed as 16-29, the resulting number is spelled as one word and the y is changed to an i .

So, 16 is expressed as dieciseis, 17 as diecisiete, 18 dieciocho, diecinueve, 20 viente

From 31-99, they are written as separate words and y is used.

31 - Treinta y uno

43 - Cuarenta y tres
