To start, take a walk around the neighborhood, or visit a local park. Pick up any flowers or leaves you see on the way that would make a beautiful and decorative picture. Some ideas include dandelions, violets, interesting fallen leaves, pine needles, or anything else that can be flattened.
When you return home, you'll need to gather the following:
Construction Paper (brown)
Green Paint (optional)
Clear Packing Tape
Items from Your Walk
To make a realistic scene, use brown construction paper and paint the bottom of the page green to make it look like grass. Otherwise, you can use any color paper you would like for an abstract picture. If you decide to add paint, you may want to allow it to dry a bit before moving on to the next step.
Next, arrange your collected items on the construction paper. Use the clear tape to secure the flowers and other items on the paper. The tape is used in place of glue, since it not only sticks better, but also protects the artwork. If you have supplies for laminating at home, that would work too.
Variations include different colored construction paper, other paint colors (such as blue paper, yellow painted sun and green painted grass), designs with your collected outdoor items, or anything else your children come up with. Younger children may need help with the tape, but other than that, they can be involved in the entire process. This craft allows kids to let their creativity shine, and gives you quality time with them, too.
Have fun!
