If you or your kids need a quick gift to make over the weekend, or just need a small bud vase for your kitchen table, this is the project for you. They are perfect for Easter and Mother's Day gifts, when presented with a garden flower bud and are bow-tied.
These beautiful stained glass looking bud vases are a snap to make and look absolutely elegant when finished. The hardest part is waiting overnight for the glue to dry so you can spray a clear-gloss finish over it.
Minimal Supplies
1 small sponge paint or craft brush
1 clear glass wine carafe, mug (as pictured) or tall olive jar, empty and sterilized
2 or 3 harmonizing shades of tissue wrapping papers, cut into approx. 50 - 1"x 1" squares (or packaged, pre-cut tissue craft squares)
White craft glue, poured into a bowl, water thinned to stir easily
1 can clear spray gloss finish
Simple Instructions
Beginning with the white craft glue thinned down with water; apply a smooth dab of glue onto the glass with the foam brush, in an area larger than the tissue squares. Press your first tissue square in place, smoothing it out with the foam brush, and add more glue over the top of the tissue square.
Prepare another spot with glue, right next to the first placement, and add a different shaded tissue square, slightly over-lapping one edge of the first tissue placement. Continue adding glue on the glass, and placing different shaded tissue wrap squares next to each other, overlapping on the edges.
Remember to smooth each square with a thin layer of glue over the top, and continue all around the container. Avoid the bottom and/or handle, leaving the glass clear, and continue up to the top without wrapping tissue (or glue) over the edge.
Finishing Touches
Allow your vase to dry overnight, and then take it outside to spray with clear gloss. Allow the spray gloss to dry (about 15 to 20 minutes) and then add a floral bud or two, tying a satin ribbon around the neck.
The vase will not be dishwasher safe or hand washable, but will wipe clean, when and if needed. The interior glass vase holds water perfectly to keep your buds fresh until they bloom.
