With summer looming just around the corner and many Americans planning scaled down road trip vacations due to the economy getting better gas mileage is on people's minds. Since buying a more fuel efficient car or a hybrid is really a long term investment it is important to learn some easy tips on how to get better gas mileage with your current vehicle.

The first thing that you should do is some light and easy maintenance which can easily add quite a few miles per gallon to your existing car. Be sure to properly inflate you tired, getting them as close to the max PSI listed on your tire wall as possible will help to ensure that you get a few extra miles per gallon. Under inflated tires can cause a big drain on gas mileage. Also be sure that your car is happy, check your spark plugs, distributor cap and plug wires to be sure that your car is firing properly. Miss firing can result in gas being wasted. Finally a simple air filter change can ensure that you are getting a proper air flow and you are not losing any gas mileage on this front either.

The next tip on how to easily get better gas mileage for your car is to drive with gas on your mind. If you make a conscious effort to achieve a higher mile per gallon rate when driving it is very easy to pull off. Keep your car less than 65 MPH, anything over this can result in a substantial loss of gas mileage. Also be sure to use cruise control on flat or long straight roads. Even the slightest variation in gas pedal pressure can cause your car to eat more gas accelerating as opposed to keeping a steady flow of gas for a constant speed. If you have a standard transmission then be sure to shift nice and early. Keep your RPMs low and you will be putting the strain on your transmission instead of your engine, this will result in a lot less gas consumption. And finally just keep your fuel in mind, avoid excessive idling and stop and go traffic. Take the Interstate instead of the windy scenic route.

All of these little tips combined will go a long ways to making sure that you get the best possible gas mileage in your current car. You can easily get a far higher mile per gallon rate by thinking with gas mileage in mind and following these simple tips. Try it and you will see.
