Easy Tips for Home Decorating

Finding Design

Some people can walk into an empty room and immediately see the perfect design. It's all in their head and in a matter of time it will be on the walls, the floors, and the furniture. Other people walk into an empty room and see just that, an empty room. There is no instant inspiration in their minds. This article, is for those people.

In this article you will find tips on inspired design. I'll help you to find inspiration and then to put it into action. So, without further ado, here are some tips.

Paint!

Paint is the most basic design change to a room. It can totally transform any space. Many people will pick a paint color and then try to make their furnishings and accessories fit around the paint. Instead, pick a few favorite pieces you already have and select your paint color around that color scheme. It may be a favorite painting, vase, picture frame, or throw blanket. Also keep in mind that you don't have to limit yourself to one paint color. Choose one main paint color and then one or two accent colors. You can also use special painting techniques such as stenciling, sponge-painting, splatter-painting, or taping stripes.

Coordinate!

One of the many short-comings of the retro age was mixing burnt orange with fuschia and lime green. Many people think coordinating your household is limited to colors but it can also extend into patterns and texture. By adding a rustic wooden center table in the living room, a coral lamp to your bedroom, or sheer voile curtains against a rough brick wall, you'll make a statement that says something about your personal style. You can also experiment with different finishing touches such as metal accents. A little bit of brass, copper, chrome, silver, or wrought iron can go a long way. So experiment with different fabrics, colors, metals, and even different kinds of stone.

Accessorize!

What's a rustic wooden center table without something to top it? A pretty book or a small table-top water fountain can give a room character as well as something to engage in. Even something as simple as a well positioned key rack by the door can make your house feel like a home. Accessorize with artwork, rugs, books, candles, flowers, small candy jars, or anything else you can think of. Just be sure that you don't over accessorize. An overly accessorized home can look cluttered instead of homey.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that your home should feel comfortable and lived in. Your home should also reflect your personal taste and not that of a magazine, a friend, or Oprah. You'll be most comfortable in a home that you've put effort into and one that reflects who you are as a person. One last tip, when decorating your home, particularly when painting, it really helps if you have a helping hand, so ask for volunteers or enlist a good friend to help get your decorating underway.
