Learn How to Make Art Using Graphic T-shirts

Maddy Fox
Making T-shirt art is a fun and easy craft project for the whole family. By using old T-shirts with graphic designs, you can create inexpensive artwork in no time. This is a great way to add style and color to a blank wall. Thrift stores and garage sales are great resources for picking up inexpensive graphic T-shirts. T-shirts come with many graphic designs like: rock and roll themes, college emblems, cats, dogs, words, flowers etc. The possibilities are endless. Have fun and see how many different designs you can come up with.

Materials

12" x 12" x 1" square Styrofoam (or any size you prefer)
a large T-shirt
scissors
craft glue
straight pins
a sawtooth picture hanger

Directions

Working on a flat surface, insert the Styrofoam inside of the T-shirt. Center the T-shirt graphics and insert a straight pin into the foam on each corner (to hold it in place). Now carefully turn your project over to the backside. Stretch the T-shirt over each side and temporarily pin it to the back with the straight pins. Using the scissors carefully cut away the back of the T-shirt and any excess fabric.

With the backside of the foam still facing up, unpin one side of the T-shirt and run a bead of craft glue down the back of the Styrofoam, just near the edge. Press the fabric to the glue and reinsert the straight pins. Before starting the next side, fold the fabric on the corner then continue the above step. Continue this procedure until all four sides have been wrapped, glued and pinned to the back side.

To hang your T-shirt art, glue the sawtooth picture hanger on the back of the Styrofoam. Let your T-shirt art dry completely before hanging.

Decorating Tips

If you would like to embellish your T-shirt art you can use many different embellishments. For a girls room, you could glue a feather boa around the sides of the T-shirt art, or just use a straight pin to attach a satin bow to a corner. You might consider framing the front of your T-shirt art with brass upholstery tacks. Just line them up next to the edge on top and push them into the foam. For a colorful frame, you can insert colored thumb tacks in the same manner. Instead of a sawtooth hanger on the back, you might want to use some ribbon and attach it to both sides near the top. To secure the ribbon, attach it with glue and insert a thumb tack. You can also use beaded trim as a hanger or to frame your T-shirt art. These are just a few ideas, I'm sure you can come up with many more to create your T-shirt art masterpiece.
