Easy Way to Backup Firefox Passwords, Bookmarks, Themes, Etc.

Mozilla is undoubtedly a very good software. Take my example:

I have been using it since years. I almost rely over it for all my internet needs. I don't remember myself using Internet Explorer instead of Firefox for any known problem with Firefox. Exceptional management of bookmarks, RSS Feeds, Passwords etc. Firefox was always there.

In that regard what if once my browser crashes? or I have to format my pc or my hard disk dies out or..............It is in this case that a backup of your firefox comes into action. Some clicks and my lovlier than life firefox comes back to life ( who cares about the rest od the pc).

I have figured out three ways to take the backup of your firefox. You can follow the one you like. After all its your Firefox.

1. Using a Firefox addon FEBE by Chuck Baker( located at this place ).

For Firefox 2 users

This addon can back up extensions, themes, bookmarks, passwords, etc, and anythimg else that Firefox offers (it can even backup/restore your entire profile).

Backups can be performed on demand or scheduled for daily, weekly, or monthly unattended runs.

For Firefox 3.0 Users
FEBE 6beta for Firefox 3 is available at http://customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/febe/febe60.html

2.Using a third party software Mozbackup ( this can be downloaded from here )

Run the software

(i) Click Next ( but obvious)
(ii) Select backup a profile and select firefox.( Make sure firefox is not running while doing it)
(iii) Select the profile and the place where you want to place your backup. Click Next.
(iv) Set a password if yuwant for it. And select the items you want to backup. Go ahead a a backup is created

3. Backup Manually

Backing up Firefoxs as simple as it only involves only copying files from one place to another. If you can do that , you can backup your Firefox

An advantage of manual backup is that you don't need to have Firefox running when you are backing it up. That's a good thing because the most common reason you want to restore is because your Firefox or Thunderbird installation is not working!

The toughest thing is finding the respective profile folders. They are located in different places for different versions of Windows. They are randomly named.

On Windows 2000/XP:

  • C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles

On Windows 9x/Me

  • C:WindowsApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles

On my XP laptop the profiles are:

  • C:Documents and SettingsIanApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesdefault.ebq
To be in a safe position, just copy them to a pendrive, usb drive, memory card, or anywhere else.
