Basically, to handle difficult boss, you just need to know what your boss expect from you. If you know what your boss expect from you, then you just need to work and perform up to his or her expectation. The problem is, in most of the time, the expectation is only in your boss's mind. Therefore, you need to find out how to get it out whether in verbal or written form. When this task is carried out, then your next step is just to fulfill your boss's expectations.
One more thing to remember is that even after you have performed up to your boss's expectation, you cannot relax. You have to update or report the progress to your boss. In addition, you also need to get confirmation from your boss about the progress or your work to make sure that you are always on track and up to his or her expectation. Using this step, you will know exactly whether your boss's expectation is still the same or has changed.
Most of the time, your boss will not show clearly what his or her expectation is. Therefore, you need to move ahead and get his or her confirmation about the expectation. One way of achieving it is by setting a clear objective for the expectation and then makes a clear and specific measure and target towards the expectation.
In making a clear and specific measure, you are indeed searching for an indicator which will help you to assess whether your boss's expectation is met or not. This is vital because normally the boss will instruct you to complete particular job without further details.
In setting the clear and specific target, you are indeed setting your mind and body to work towards the target, thus you will show your full commitment to achieve it. If you think the target is too stretched, then you may need to talk and negotiate with your boss about it. You may know what your boss would expect from you, right?
In conclusion, even though most bosses are difficult to handle, but if you can work up to his or her expectation; then you do not need to worry. They are only difficult and fussy when their workers are not working properly and up to his or her expectation only!
