Easy Ways to Add Bold Splashes of Color to the Home

Donna Kay
If you love bold splashes of color in the home, there are ways to add it that can be easily changed again. Sometimes living in a room painted a bold color can get old pretty fast. But living in a room that's mostly neutral with bold splashes of color is not as scary. As a renter living with white walls for many years, I learned to find creative ways to use bold splashes of color that could easily be changed again.

The same color principal holds true for furniture. While a bold lime green sofa might be trendy, it's probably not a wise decision unless you can afford to replace it as soon as you're tired of it. A better option is to buy neutral upholstered furniture pieces that have longevity and then add bold splashes of that lime green color that you love. Although paint is also affordable and easily changed, there are times when it makes more sense to add the bold splashes of color you crave in smaller doses.

Pillows

Pillows are one of the easiest ways to add a bold splash of a favorite color to a room. As far as I'm concerned, you can't have too many pillows on a bed or a sofa. If you have a white or neutral back ground to put the pillows against, then the sky's the limit for bold color choices. Pillows are inexpensive and can be easily changed. You can buy bright colored pillows when you find them on sale, or become a frequent fabric store visitor and buy bold colored fabric on sale.

Chair Cushions

The same bold splashes of color can be put on seat cushions. If you have kitchen chairs without comfy cushions, then add them in a bold and bright color that can be changed later. The cost is not much more than pillows. You can also cover dining room chair cushions for a bold splash of color that's not permanent. Leave the existing fabric on the cushion so that when you tire of a trendy bold color, you can just remove it. Another option is dining room chair slip covers in a bright color that easily changed.

Wall Art

This is wonderful way to showcase bold splashes of color. It's beautiful to see brightly colored artwork against a white wall. It doesn't matter if it's a child's brightly colored finger paintings or an original work of art. It's an ideal way to bring color to a wall without painting the entire room a bold color you'll want to change in a year. And if you rent, you know all too well that painting the walls are sometimes not an option.

Another way to add bold splashes of color is to buy artists' canvas and get creative with paint, no artistic skills required. The canvas can be left in the original shape or cut into circles or other geometric shapes. Then paint them bold colors for an instant face-lift to a room. You can also add bold splashes of color on the walls by framing brightly colored scarves you no longer wear or leftover fabric.

Accessories, Throw Rugs and Candles

This is an easy way to spread bold splashes of color around a room that easily changed. Buy those bright fuchsia candles or chartreuse vases that you fell in love with. Accessories can be easily changed, unlike furniture and other more expensive items. Maybe you have a collection of colorful pottery that you can showcase.

The possibilities are almost endless for adding bold color with accessories. Lamp shades and throw rugs are another way to add vibrant color that can be changed just as easily as pillows. As long as the largest surfaces of a room are white or neutral, bold splashes of color can make an impact without being overwhelming. If you look at bold colors as temporary, they can suddenly become safe enough to try throughout the home, as long as you know they can easily be changed.
