Easy Ways to Clean Ivory Keys on a Piano

Dina Montgomery
You sit down to play a beautiful song on your piano and wonder how long it has actually been since the ivory keys were cleaned. They have turned yellow and dingy, and need to be cleaned as soon as possible. Here are some easy and hassle-free ways that you can get that ivory keyboard looking as brand new as when you first brought the piano home.

Use Plain Yogurt

When the ivory keys on your piano has turned yellow and grimy, just run to your refrigerator and grab a container of plain yogurt. Take a clean, soft cloth and spread a thin layer of the plain yogurt over each key. Gently work the thin layer of plain yogurt into the key with the cloth and then wipe it off with another clean, soft cloth. You will be absolutely amazed at how well this works.

Use Toothpaste

Wet a soft bristle toothbrush and apply a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste to the toothbrush, gently clean each key on the piano. If the key is heavily soiled, then it might take a little bit longer. Just remind yourself that you don't have to clean every single key in one day. You can split the project up into several days if need be.

After you have cleaned the keys with the non-abrasive toothpaste, gently wipe the keys with a dampened clean, soft cloth. If the keys are heavily soiled, you may need to buff the keys a few extra times.

Use pencil erasers

Using an ordinary pencil eraser will work wonders for cleaning ivory piano keys. They will get rid of any dirt, grime, or finger prints that happen to fall on them. Just take an eraser and gently rub the ivory keys, using a circular motion. It's best to use an eraser that is small enough so it can fit in between the keys easily.

Bonus

To keep the ivory keys in great shape for years to come, take a soft, clean cloth and dip it into some milk. Gently buff the keys, this works because the calcium in the milk will absorb into the ivory keys and will help them to stay in good condition.

Use any of these solutions to get your ivory piano keys shining and dirt-free. You will be amazed of how well it works and you didn't even have to run to the store to buy expensive cleaning solution. You saved time and money, and who doesn't love that idea?

Nice, Dina. I hope this gets through, for some reason I am unable to leave comments at times.

Page love! Still must leave comments as a guest and fill out captchas every time, even though I am logged in! I have contacted AC/Yahoo about this and gotten no response. Frustrating. : /
