Easy Ways to Be Green and Save Money

Eric Martin

Looking for easy ways to be green that will help you save money? There are many ways to be ecologically friendly while lowering bills and saving money. In fact, you could even say the easiest and most obvious ways of being green all lead to saving money.

When you consume fewer resources, you don't have to pay as much as you would using more. It turns out, less really is more after all. The less electricity you use, the more you will save on your energy bill. The less water you use, the more you will save on that bill. Driving less saves you money on gasoline.

But how can you do these things without going to a lot of trouble, riding your bike everywhere and sitting in the dark? What are some easy ways to be green and save money? Here are a few ideas.

Easy Ways to Be Green: The Power-Strip Method

Use a power-strip that can turn off power to a group of appliances with one flip of a switch.

When you're not home, you don't need your appliances to suck energy, yet televisions, microwaves and Internet modems do just that and continue to drain power even when they are in "off" mode.

You can tell that power is being used because there is a little light glowing on the television console. That light is drawing power. Your DVD player is probably doing the same thing, drawing power for a light and a digital display. The modem has its lights flashing too, and you might be an hour away at a different computer at your workplace.

Each of these appliances is costing you money when you're not around. Get those little lights and displays to go completely off and you'll save money.

One very easy way to be green and save money is plug related appliances to a single power-strip. Connect the DVD player and television to one power-strip.

You can flip on the power-strip for your television and DVD player at the same time and turn the power off to both appliances at the same time very easily. Doing this with your computer and your modem as well can help you shave down your energy bill and save natural resources too. This isn't going to save the world, but it's one very easy way to be green and save money.

Easy Ways to Be Green: Save Water Doing Dishes

Your water bill might not be high to begin with but if you can save water, be green, and save money on your bill every month, why not give it a try? There are three easy ways to save water while you are doing dishes

Saving water can be as easy as making sure your dishwasher is full every time you use it. You can also use a bucket or stopper the sink for soaking dishes to save water. Or you can turn off the faucet while you scrape each dish. The water isn't helping you scrape all the time and if it isn't helping, that means it's actually being wasted.

Some waste is inevitable. You don't have to harness each drop of water like it's the last drop on earth. It isn't. But it is costing you money on your water bill.

Between saving on electricity by using power-strips and saving water with these methods, you can easily be green and save enough money to buy yourself a used DVD - which is yet another way to be ecologically considerate.

Easy Ways to Be Green: Buy Used

Buying used products is an obvious way to save money and it's another easy way to be green. Products require natural resources to be made. Energy is required for the manufacturing process in addition to the actual materials used in the product.

By purchasing used DVDs, used books and even used furniture, you are saving money (compared to buying new) and saving those resources that would be used in the production of another new DVD, book or kitchen table.

Going with used products can be an extremely easy way to be green and save money. If you're shopping online anyway, it can be just as easy to buy used as it is to buy new, and you'll save money every time.
