What is happening in the book publishing industry? An article written by Publisher's weekly, entitled Crunch time for Borders noted that Border's traditional brick-and-mortar bookstore is not making their numbers with their traditional sales numbers down by around 5.3%.
In fact, recent events have caused both the Publisher's weekly and the NY Times to begin reviewing independent releases on a limited basis. And they said they wouldn't do that, just six months ago.
For years, traditional publishing companies set the stage for an author's success. There were no other alternatives. You as a writer would solicit a big publishing house by sending in query letters and responding to requests for submissions. If the book publisher thought your book had merit, they would give you an advance with the expectation that you would be available to help market your book.
Buying a book online is easy
Nowadays the market is wide open. Books purchased from the comfort of your own home from Barnes and Noble, Borders, and Amazon.com will be delivered to your house in days. However, if instant gratification is something that tickles your fancy, (as it does mine) E-books now offer readers the luxury of instant gratification. As long as you have the reading software loaded to your device, you can begin reading your new EPUB within minutes.
I recently wrote a memoir targeted to teens and young adults. It made total sense to go the e-book route, particularly when I heard from other authors that that is where the majority of their sales are coming from.
What I found out was that in terms of devices available for reading an electronic book, the market has never been so plentiful. For example if you download a book from 'BooksonBoard.com', you can view it on your Sony, Nook, Kindle, Cybook, I-phone and Netbook.
E-book sales are trending positively
Recently Kindle Review noted that E-books could make up for 10% of total book Sales (Kindle Review). If you were wondering, a used kindle costs around $139 and a new one is running about $189 right now but if you have an I-phone, you can install the free Kindle app and read your books on the go without purchasing an additional reader device.
Use Stanza to download e-books to your 'I' devices (I-Phone, I-Pad, I-Tunes) or to your desktop. Here is how.
Or if you want to use your computer desktop, use Firefox extension add-ons to read E-books on your PC. Download software here.
How to download an e-book to your I-phone.
To download an E-book from Books on Board, you will want to download the free software (Stanza or Kindle) first.
Then use Safari to navigate to your provider such as www.BooksonBoard.com to begin. Find the title you want after entering your personal information, and then click submit to login. You have the option to store this information for future purchases by selecting remember my payment info.
If you don't like reading a book on a small screen, the Kindle2 offers a larger reading surface and some great features such as Wi-Fi, pdf readability, Facebook and Twitter postings, and the ability to store a book collection of up to 1500 books. Additional books can be stored free on the Kindle server. (Kindle2)
Free e-books
Free ebooks are also available for download in some places. Try feedbooks.com for older titles that are now in the public domain. Bookyards.com, Amazon.com, and Sony EBook store also offer free titles.
Want to try it out and use me as your guinea pig? Purchase my e-book and download the viewer. You will receive an emailed copy of the file shortly. Save the file, and then open your EPUB viewer. You can browse to the file and within minutes you will be reading your first ebook.
