According to national statistics taken by the Bureau Of Justice Statistics many of the crimes of home burglaries most often occur during the daytime when people are either at work or while they are in school. During the summertime in July & August when most families are away from their homes for family vacations, this sets up the perfect time for a home burglary to occur. Statistics have also shown that during hard economic times such as we have right now sets the perfect scenario for crimes of theft of homes to rise. It is hard for everyone to find any work right now so most people will just choose to turn to theft to get by.
Handguns
Purchase either a shotgun or a handgun to keep at your home and if you ever see anyone on your property that does not belong there, show him or her that you do have a gun. There are different laws for owning handguns but if you live in the great state of Texas as I do you can own a firearm and use it to protect yourself.
Neighborhood Watches
Get to know every neighbor in you surrounding neighborhood and form a neighborhood watch system. One person from every family can take turns driving around the neighborhood and keep a look out for any suspicious behavior from someone that is not known to be from around that area.
Home Security System
This type of crime prevention for the home can be expensive and during these hard economic times we are all trying to save money and an easy way to help prevent any break-ins of your home is to just display security alarm stickers on your doors and windows that you can go get from security system companies.
Man's Best Friend
A dog is the best way to run a burglar away. Just hearing the sound of a big dog growling will make them run. If you do not want to invest in a pet, then a less expensive crime deterrent is to record a dog barking and turn it on when you leave home where it will play over & over again. You could also buy a Beware of Dog Sign & hang them on fences and on your front doors and windows of your home. Even though you may not even own a dog, a criminal may not want to find out whether there is a dog inside or not. Leaving a food & water bowl on your front porch will work too and will let a criminal know that there is a dog somewhere on the premises.
Car Alarms System
If you notice someone hanging around your property and your car has an alarm system on it, go grab your car keys and push button to blast the alarm and make the would be thief run off.
Extra Measures You Can Do To Prevent Home Crime:
Sliding Glass Doors
Measure the length of the sliding track when the door is shut. Cut a piece of a wooden dowel leaving the wooden piece ½ inch shorter than what the track measured. Place the wooden dowel into the sliding track when the glass door is shut. The wooden dowel will deter the door from being opened from the outside.
Windows
Measure the length of each window with the window shut. Cut a piece of a wooden dowel but make it 2 inches shorter than w the total measurement. Place this in the track along the bottom of each window. The window cannot be opened from the outside.
Instead of just using mini blinds on your windows, hang thick drapes or curtains and place the slats of the mini blinds facing up instead of down. You cannot see in to homes when the slats of the blinds are facing upwards. If you live in an upstairs apartment then face the slats of the blinds facing downward.
Televisions & Radios
Even when you are away from home, leave a television on somewhere in your home or even the stereo. Make sure the volume is turned up enough so that it can be heard from the outside of your home.
Garages, Gates & Storage Sheds
Keep garage doors closed and locked at all times and keep locks on all gates leading into your yard. Keep deadbolt locks on all sheds as well & any other type of storage facility on your property.
Porches & Sidewalks & Other Exteriors of The Home
Install solar powered lighting on porches and all along the sidewalk leading up to your home. Also place some type of lighting all around the exterior of your home.
