It is certainly the age of the Internet. You can conduct almost all of your business while sitting at home and logging on to your computer. It is easier now than ever to pay your bills, shop, communicate with people and work online. With the ease and convenience of the Internet, also comes risk. Every time you log onto the Internet, you are putting yourself at risk of identity theft. You have probably heard quite a bit about identity theft and now more than ever, you need to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. It is estimated that every year, over 25 million Americans fall victim of consumer fraud or identity theft. These can range from telemarketing scams to Internet crimes. Here are some simple ways that you can protect yourself against identity theft starting today

Protect Your Personal Information:

Your personal information is just that, your personal information. That means that you should never give out your personal information to anyone, when you are on the Internet. This is especially true for contact that you have not initiated, such as e-mails asking you to click on any link to provide more information. These scams are ways that identity thieves can still your information and cause a lot of damage to you.

A legitimate company that needs to get information will never ask for your information online. For example, if you have recently made several large credit card purchases, you may get an e-mail from your credit card company asking you to call them. This could be a legitimate e-mail, because it is not asking for you to enter your personal information into a website or via e-mail. If this happens to you, your best bet is to call the phone number on your credit card and speak to a customer service agent. Other personal information that you should never give out on the Internet, include your home phone number or address, Social Security number, bank information and credit card information.

Be Wary of Spam E-Mails:

If you are like most people, you probably spend a lot of time online checking your e-mail and surfing the Internet. If you receive an e-mail for an offer that seems too good to be true, as the saying goes, it probably is. You should be wary of any offer that you receive by e-mail. That seems fishy or too good to be true. In addition also be aware of e-mails that you receive from companies that you do not know or contests or ways to win free prizes. This usually indicates a scam, and you should report all spam e-mails to your Internet service provider.

Look for Legitimate Websites:

If you are shopping online, you need to make sure that the website that you are using is a legitimate. As sad as it may seem, there are many people out there that create fake business websites in order to steal your credit card information. One way to make sure that the website that you are using for your online shopping is safe is to check to see if it offers encrypted security for your checkout. Cryptic security means that your personal information that you have entered is scrambled after it enters cyberspace. Encrypted information is much harder to steal online

Keep Your Social Security Number to Yourself:

You never want to give out your social security number to anyone on the Internet. As mentioned before, legitimate companies will never ask for your social security number online. Thieves know how to use your Social Security card to steal your identity, so make sure that you do not become a statistic. It is also a good idea to never include a part of your social security number for your passwords or usernames when you are online.

Change Your Online Passwords Frequently:

Last of all, you should make sure that you change all passwords that you use on the Internet frequently. Thieves are always looking for ways to still your information including your security passwords. In addition, make sure that your passwords are not easy to guess and use a combination of both numbers and letters. Never use information such as your birthday, bank account numbers, address or phone numbers as your password, as these are too easy for thieves to steal. Also, make sure that every time you set up an online account that you use a different password. When you use the same password over and over again, it will be easy for thieves to break into your personal information.

When you take these easy steps to protect yourself from identity theft, you can make sure that you do not become a statistic. In addition, if you feel that you have been the victim of identity theft or other online crime, you should contact your credit card company, your bank, and your local authorities.
