Easy Ways to Spruce Up Your Porch

A Little Time, a Little Money Equals a Great Porch!

Abby Greenhill
There is nothing more relaxing that sitting in a swing on your porch, book in hand and a fresh sweet tea by your side. A dream? Maybe, but a dream you can make come true. With a little time and a small amount of work, your porch can be a welcoming spot for visitors or a quiet and relaxing place just for you!

Easy Ways to Spruce up Your Porch - A Swing

If you do not have a swing, then you should buy one. You can buy a swing at home improvement stores or even on-line. You can get a wicker swing, or a wooden one. You can paint or stain a wooden swing to match or coordinate with the colors of your home. If you have a little artistic ability, hand paint flowers on the swing to make it truly unique.

If you already have a swing, and it's looking a little beat, give it a good power wash, then a fresh coat of paint and it will be almost as good as new. Try adding a colorful cushion to your swing so it will be even more comfy for you.

Easy Ways to Spruce up Your Porch - A Ceiling Fan

If you would like to add a little 'southern comfort' to you porch, add a ceiling fan. This may require the services of an electrician if there is no existing electric available to run a ceiling fan. An outside ceiling fan is different from an interior ceiling fan. Take my word for it, if you put an interior ceiling fan outside, after a period of time and heat exposure the blades will droop. Exterior ceiling fans are made for the outdoor use. Invest your money wisely, buy the proper ceiling fan. See photo #2 for an example of an interior fan used outside.

Easy Ways to Spruce up Your Porch - Wall Art

Just because the walls are exterior, doesn't mean you can't add decorative items to them. Metal decorative pieces are all the rage, they are not expensive and they are a perfect addition for a porch. Let your creativity run free and make that porch an inviting living area. Photo #2 shows some of my metal wall art.

Easy Ways to Spruce up Your Porch - A Rug

If your porch is well protected, you could use a small interior rug. However, you can buy very inexpensive outdoor rugs that can take the weather and the foot traffic and still look good season after season. Add a big, or little, splash of color with a rug.

Easy Ways to Spruce up Your Porch - Furniture

Do you have an old baker's rack or a bookcase that no longer fits with your interior decor? Give it a paint job and put it on the porch. You can display colorful vases and flowers which will give a homey feel to your porch. Take a look in your basement, garage and attic and see what you can come up with. For the price of some paint you can create a unique piece of furniture for your porch.

Spring truly is around the corner; get your porch ready now so you will have time to enjoy it later. These easy ways to spruce up your porch will help you get the job done.

Actually, our porch time is now, because in the middle of summer, we want to stay in with the air conditioner. Great article.

Aaah, porch time. Can't get here soon enough for me. I have a swing on my patio-on-the-pond.

Where's the container pots? You used the word 'spruce' so I thought for sure you'd have container pots! Great ideas though and a porch swing just makes any porch very comfy looking.

Great ideas! That's what I miss most about our previous house, the big front porch we had, loved to sit out there.
