Now it's time to take the leap and become a healthy family. If I can find the time in my own hectic family life then so can you. Keep reading as I share some of my tried and true tips.
Shop better. It's so easy to rely on processed goodies and not so healthy options from the grocery store. What you might not know is that it's just as easy to throw together a quick dinner of lean meat or chicken and fresh veggies.
Snack wisely. There is nothing wrong with a snack here and there but be sure to stock the fridge with healthy choices. To make them more tempting try cutting up fresh fruit and portioning out trail mix and other good for you treats into individual snack sized portions.
Schedule in exercise. If you don't plan for it like everything else in your life you most likely won't get to it. Make it a priority.
Make it a family event. Plan a nightly walk after dinner. It's great exercise and a no-pressure way for your kids to talk to you.
Make the most of vacations. Wherever you go look for activities that will provide exercise as well as entertainment. Think nature walks, surfing, bike riding, and anything else that will get your heart pumping.
A little friendly competition. Track your progress as a family and give small prizes to whoever is doing the best at meeting whatever goals you set.
Challenge another family. Go head to head in a battle of the fit families. If there is a family you are especially close to who is also looking to get healthy compare progress and even consider scheduling friendly competitions. The losing family can make the winning family a healthy dinner as a reward!
Join a gym. Make it a part of your daily routine to start or finish your day with a workout and shower.
Start packing a lunch. When you eat out every day you make food choices at the worst possible time... when you are starving and often stressed from work. By packing your lunch you can ensure you have something healthy to grab when lunch comes around.
Start small. Cut out little things that you are unlikely to miss. If you normally have coffee with cream and sugar switch to half and half and a sugar substitute. Or cut them out altogether. Try to step down a level in your milk. Going from full fat to skim is a leap but going down to 2% won't seem like much of a difference. Strive to make one small change a week and stick to it.
Now that you have the tools and motivation it's time to get out there and get healthy! You will not only be doing something great for yourself but you will also set a terrific example for your children. So, what are you waiting for? Get moving!
