Easy Ways to Store Pet Food When You Have Little Space

Keeping Kibble at Bay

Landra Lynn Jacobs

All dog owners know that part of owning a pet involves large bags of kibble. Unfortunately, these bags are often made of flimsy paper that tears, causing large spills. In addition, pests can sometimes cause holes in the bag to get to the dog food. Here are four unique ways to store dog food that will help keep the mess to a minimum.

Plastic Trash Can with Locking Lid

When most people think of plastic trash cans, they think of those found out at the curb. Most people own these plastic trash cans with locking lids to dispose of extra waste in addition to the sanitary commission supplied cans. What they often overlook is that these are a great way to store dog food! Not only do they hold large quantities of kibble, the locking lid also keeps bugs and rodents out. Of course, it can be hazardous to your animal's health if you use a plastic trash can that was previously used for waste, so purchase a new one from a local home improvement retailer before use.

Individual Doggy Bags

One dog food storage option for owners of small dogs is individual doggy bags. Scoop out the appropriate amount of kibble from the paper bag. Place this amount in a small plastic zipper seal bag and repeat until all of the dog food has been dished out. Keep the bags in a plastic storage tote, cardboard box with lid, kitchen canister, or other storage container. To keep things environmentally friendly, reuse the plastic baggies as the kibble is fed to the dog by saving them for the next bag of dog food purchased. For small dogs on the go, this also makes taking meals along easy and convenient.

Toy Box with Lid

Many dog owners think of their pets as children. However, a children's toy box does make a great storage option for dog food! The trick to this method is to make sure the toy box has a securely closing lid, if not a locking one. (After all, you don't want Fido helping himself, do you?) Many of these toy boxes can be found in chain stores (Target, Walmart, K-Mart, etc.) or at garage sales for cheap.

Plywood Box

Short on cash but have a few extra home improvement supplies around? Make your own dog food storage container! A simple plywood box with double hinged lid can cost under $10 worth of supplies and only take a few hours for a common do-it-yourselfer to complete. Prime and paint, if desired.
