Easy Ways to Make Time for Exercise

Janey
We all know how important exercise is, but do we all make time for it? Relax. You don't need to join a gym, start a Marine Corps workout program or even jog every morning before work. There are plenty of ways to make an exercise program part of your life. Try these easy, quick and sometimes sneaky ways to get more exercise into your life.

Do you always look for the closest parking place at the grocery or the mall? Start parking further away. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do, and every step counts. You can also take the stairs instead of the elevator when you're at the office. If you live in an apartment, do the same thing. Walk 10 minutes during your lunchtime. Plug into your Ipod and enjoy a brisk walk. If you work in a large building, you can enjoy a great walk indoors no matter what the weather is like. Most malls open early for walkers. You can get some exercise and window shop at the same time. And window shop is all you'll do since the shops are open yet.

Ready to improve your marriage, too? You and your spouse can make a pact to walk or run together three nights a week. Not only will your physical body become healthier, your relationship will improve, as well. Or meet a friend every night for a walk in the park.

Play active games with your children. Ride bikes, play tennis at the local community center, make a game out of running sprints. Children won't see it as exercise; for them it will be quality time with a parent. Bowling is a great family activity. If you put your mind to it, you can come up with all sorts of games that incorporate good exercise.

Get involved in a fun sport. Many churches have recreational leagues where the emphasis is on the friendship and fun, rather than always winning. Organize a team at your office, and play other workplace groups.

If you're not ready to put the television on hold, at least get healthy while watching. You can lift weights and do stretches while watching your favorite show. Get an exercise bike and ride it while you watch. Force yourself to keep going until the program is over.

Motivate yourself by thinking about all the positive health benefits of exercise. Remember that it's a great stress manager. There's nothing like hitting that ball with a racquet to release a little tension.

And the most important way to keep that exercise routine going? That's simple. Just make it a priority in your life. People who contract a life-threatening illness and learn they have to stick to a particular diet or exercise plan do it without blinking an eye. Don't wait until this happens to you. Make a date with yourself. Write it in your planner. Plug it into your PDA. Just make the time. Once you get in a routine, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.
