Easy Ways to Update a Bathroom Mirror

Selecting a Décor Theme

What do you do with a bathroom mirror that is so old, plain, or discolored around the edges, that you are ready to tear it out with your bare hands? Instead of taking drastic measures, why not try this favorite decorator's tip, which will lend itself to a variety of boudoir décor.

Decide what style of décor you would like for your bathroom, as you will be creating a focal-point framed mirror. With just a few additional decorator items complimenting the mirror theme, you can wind up with a brand new-looking bathroom.

Measure Bathroom Mirror

Using a yard stick measure the height and the width of your bathroom mirror. You will be adding an extra inch onto all four sides (for securing to the wall, beyond the mirror) so increase each measurement (height and width) by an extra 2 inches, and write them down for reference before going to the local hardware store for framing lumber.

Local Hardware Store

Once in the lumber section of your local hardware store look for framing, baseboard molding, chair-railing, or wainscoting to go around your mirror, in the style you like best. Some styles come pre-painted, but you can also paint them yourself, or simply leave them rustic.

Baseboards or chair-railings would be a good choice, providing they are at least 3" wide (or more) to sufficiently cover the areas of worn-out mirror, around the perimeter. These are available in long strips or lengths to saw yourself, or request specific lengths to be cut to your measurements, if the service is offered.

You will also want to look at the selection of knobs, handles, and other quick-change decorator items. Find something in the same theme as you've planned for your mirror, and consider changing out drawer pulls to complete the look; such as shells for a beach look, or hand-painted porcelain in a variety of styles.

Mirror Frame Finishes

A rustic-look mirror frame will need a clear protective coat over bare wood or stained finish, due to high bathroom moisture content. Paint, spray, or brush-on finishes are quick and easy to apply.

Follow stain or paint instructions, and allow framing boards to dry overnight before installing. Carefully nail boards into place, beyond and away from the edges of the mirror, so you don't crack it.

Line up beveled frame edges or angles where the boards meet, and either glue or nail corners into place. Add other decorator touches such as knobs and handles, to complete your easy bathroom remodel. New towels and bath rugs are optional.

Cheri - Not only does this save money, but it help save the environment, too. I always choose to re-do or re-make over trashing and buying new. Thanks for the ideas.
