Easy to Make Wedding Accessories

Learn How to Make a Wedding Veil, Bouquet Holder and Ring Bearer's Pillow

Maddy Fox
There are many different wedding accessories that are both fun and easy to craft and they will save you money as well. Although this is not the only benefit in making your own wedding accessories. Making some of the wedding accessories yourself, will give you the opportunity to personalize your items to suit your taste and wedding. You can implement the colors of your wedding into your wedding accessories and even match the flowers, to the ones you are planning to decorate your wedding with. I have listed three great craft projects for wedding accessories with easy to follow directions. You can learn how to make your own wedding veil, ring bearers pillow and your own bouquet holders.

One of the first wedding accessories you will learn to make is a bouquet holder otherwise known as tussie mussie. These are great wedding accessories to make, individual bouquets for your maid of honor and bridesmaids.

Materials:

Paper doilies (available at craft stores)
glue gun/glue sticks
tulle fabric
a silk flower bunch
1/2" ribbon
decorative button or charm (available at craft stores)

Directions:

Roll the doily into the shape of a cone and glue the seam. Cut 4 to 6 small strips of ribbon and glue them, one on top of the other to the front of the cone. Allow the ribbons to hang loosely down the front of the cone. Glue a decorative button or charm over the ribbon. Next cut the tulle into a round shape, making it large enough to fit inside of the cone with about 2" of the tulle extending out of the cone. Add a small amount of glue to the center of the tulle and push the center of the tulle into the bottom of the cone. Position the tulle around the inside of the cone and place the silk flower bunch inside. You have finished crafting the first, of your wedding accessories.

Now you are ready to create one of the most expensive wedding accessories, the wedding veil. Making your own veil will save you a lot of money, since most veils cost between $150 to $300. You can create your own veil for $50 or less.

Materials:

A white or clear headband or large hair comb
white floral wire
silk flowers
beads-pearls-crystals or rhinestone embellishments
a hot glue gun
velcro and tulle fabric

Directions:

Use the hot glue to attach the silk flowers and any embellishments to the headband. If you are using a large hair comb you might prefer arranging the flowers into a design first and then use the floral wire to attach the flowers to the comb, wrapping in between the teeth. Next you will need to lay the tulle fabric on a flat surface and cut the fabric to the length you want your veil to be. You can cut the veil straight across or give it a curved edge, it's up to you. Now gather the top of the veil together. Using a running stitch, sew across the top of the tulle as you push the tulle together to create a full section that will fit onto your headpiece. If you don't have a sewing machine. Simply double thread a needle and sew a straight line along the top of the tulle, pull the fabric together to create the fullness and the size you need to fit your headpiece and tie it off. Hot glue a strip of velcro to the top of the veil and hot glue the other portion of the velcro to the under side of the headpiece. This way the veil can be easily removed from the headpiece after the wedding ceremony. If you like you can even attach satin ribbon to the bottom or all the way around the veil.

The last project for making your own wedding accessories, is a ring bearers pillow. This is an easy craft project and although my material list is based on white, you can use your own special colors.

Materials:

18" of white satin fabric
81/2" square card board
pencil or chalk
thread
white lace 20" long by 2" wide
wide satin ribbon
polyester fiberfill
pearl bead trim
2 plastic gold rings

Directions:

Fold the satin in half, with the right sides facing in. Lay the cardboard onto the fabric and trace the pattern. Pin the two layers together then cut the fabric using the marks you made with the pattern. Unpin the two pieces of satin. Now cut two 81/2" lengths of the 2" wide lace. Stitch the two pieces of lace to the right side of one satin square, placing them in the center, about an inch apart. Place the two satin squares on top of each other, with the right sides of the fabric facing each other again. Pin the squares together along each edge. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew around the square, leaving a 2" opening (for stuffing the pillow). Turn the satin square right side out. Stuff the pillow with the polyester fill. Hand stitch the 2" opening, closed. Hand stitch the pearl bead trim around the edge of the pillow. Use the ribbon to make a large satin bow. Find the center of the pillow and attach the satin bow with hot glue or sewing by hand. Finish the pillow by attaching the 2 plastic gold rings.

Simply follow these techniques and you will be able to make three beautiful wedding accessories. Remember to be creative and most of all have fun making your own wedding accessories for your special day.
