Written language transfers meanings and it is one of the most common forms of communication available. Websites, advertisements, books, magazines, memos, work rules and millions of other pieces of paper have written forms of communication. The problem is that many people do not know how write well beyond a paragraph or two. However, using a simple process can help "kick start" your document.

Essays and writing are an important part of communication. This communication process is used nearly across the human spectrum of sharing information. Strong communication is necessary for the transfer of information from one person to the next. This essay will discuss some of the many different aspects of writing a strong essay that provide clear and concise direction.

Writing is a skill that can be learned over time. Previously I assumed that writing was about either being born with strong communication or not born with strong communication. However, after become more familiar with the English language I have learned that strong essay writing is a skill that can be developed and learned.

Some strategies are as follows:

Reading: It is important to be well informed and knowledgeable about the topic you are writing. This background research is important in order to clarify concepts for readers. The more background knowledge you have the more likely you are able to produce a well-informed report.

Prewriting: Understand the boundaries of the assignment, determining your purpose, audience, tone, and point of view all contribute to the overall writing process. A journal can help in organizing and maintaining valuable information to use in essay writing. The journal can also be used for notes in the research process and to write down key concepts or phrases to use in the report.

Identify the thesis: Each essay should have significant points and position. The thesis defines that purpose and all writing should revolve around and support that thesis. If the paper does not have a thesis it may appear to ramble and be unfocused. Supporting the thesis with citations, references, and key points can help in creating a well researched report.

Organizing the evidence: Evidence and supporting information can be organized in many different ways. The way in which the information is organized can impact the clarity and experience of the reader. Chronological is to start at one point and give events in time order. Spatialis is to start at one point in place and describe elements as you move through. Emphatic is to start with the least important ideas and save the most compelling for last. Emphatic may also mean moving from simple to complex.

Draft: Drafts are the working part of the document that allow for multiple changes and edits. In most cases it is beneficial to free write with some structure. After drafting one can complete multiple versions developing more clarity and conciseness with each draft.

Most people can write basic sentences but the way in which these sentences are organized can help in creating a meaningful and beneficial report. People need a place to start and a process can help them organize their thoughts and develop a meaningful piece of communication. The process outlined in the report from reading, thesis, journal, drafts and order can further help people have structure in their writing process.
