Easy-to-Make Glitter Hand Lettering

Hand lettering refers to the art of writing exquisite script font in as large a size as you desire. If you apply this skill to crafts, you can make glitter hand lettering to ornament greeting cards, gifts and art projects. You don't have to master the art of calligraphy or scaling, thanks to a simple trick. Nor do you need to mess with glitter or glue. Intrigued? Well, let's get started with the easy-to-make glitter hand lettering.

Step #1. Choose Your Hand Lettering Font and Size

Write the message or letters you need on a computer. Choose your favorite font , then scale the size of the letters to fit your craft project. For my "Happy New Year" easy-to-make glitter hand lettering, I used the lettering font, Monotype Corsiva in size 80. To avoid having to use loose glitter, I used letters that were no taller than 2 inches (you'll soon see why).

Step #2. Prepare the Hand Lettering Stencil

Print the message or lettering font in black. The printed page will become your stencil for the easy-to-make glitter hand lettering. In daylight, press the sheet of paper to a glass window with the letters facing down. Because of the light you'll be able to see the letters through the paper. Trace their outline on the back of the paper using a pencil or pen.

Step #3. Add Glitter to the Hand Lettering Stencil

You might think that for the easy-to-make glitter hand lettering you'll need glue and glitter powder (and a broom on standby), but actually you won't. Instead, at a craft store buy a glitter wire ribbon. Not only will it be cheaper than a jar of glitter, it will be less messy too. Just glue a strip of glitter ribbon over the printed side of the hand lettering stencil (the side that the printer made) and leave it to dry for a few minutes.

Step #4. Cut Out the Easy-to-Make Glitter Hand lettering

Following the tracing of the hand lettering, which you drew on the back of the paper, cut out each letter carefully. Remember that the easy-to-make glitter hand lettering is cut from its mirror image on the back of the stencil, but once you look at the glitter side the shape of the letters will look right.

Tips

Be sure to use clear-drying craft glue for the easy-to-make hand lettering, in case some glue should seep through the glitter ribbon. In addition, use very little glue and smear it evenly across the ribbon.
