Easy-to-Make Hanging Easter Egg Ornaments

Anni Sofferet
Decorating your home or office with hanging Easter egg ornaments is a perfect way to spread holiday cheer on a budget. You'll need real eggs, a knitting needle, craft wire and spray paint. As an option, you can also decorate your eggs with noddles or beads. So let's get started making hanging Easter egg ornaments.

Step #1. Hollow the Eggs

When I was a kid, we just loved this part. Take a knitting needle and use it to punch a tiny hole at the top of an extra-large egg. Next, make a hole at the bottom of the egg just below the hole on the top. Enlarge the two holes a little with the tip of some craft wire. Then wrap your mouth over the top hole and blow out the contents of the egg through the hole on the bottom (be sure to place a bowl below the egg). If the content of the egg isn't coming out, just enlarge the holes a little more, especially the bottom one.

Step #2. Turn the Eggs into Ornaments

Pass craft wire through the top hole of the hollowed egg and out the bottom one. On the bottom, twirl the wire to keep the egg from slipping out again. If you wish to decorate your ornament with beads or noddles, slip them on the bottom wire before you twirl it. For the top wire, slip your beads or noodles in then create a large closed loop and end by twirling the wire around itself.

Step #3. Decorate Your Hanging Easter Egg Ornaments

Now comes the fun part. You can glue tiny star noodles or bunny stickers on the eggs, which will make it seem as if your hanging Easter eggs are embossed (once you paint everything is painted). Once finished, hang the eggs outside and spray paint them (including the wire, beads and stickers) with beautiful Easter colors like pinks, yellows and blues. For more formal hanging Easter eggs try hammered gold spray paint from Rust Oleum (see the article picture).

Step #4. Decorate with Your Hanging Easter Egg Ornaments

Remember that your Easter eggs are fragile; therefore, for outdoor use hang them in sheltered areas like your porch or gazebo. For indoor decorating, hang your Easter eggs in a line from your mantle by stringing them on craft wire. Suspend your Easter eggs over windows using fishing wire, or hang them from houseplants, chandeliers, tree candle holders or candelabras. In short, have as much fun decorating with your easy-to-make hanging Easter egg ornaments as you had making them.
