Where Did the Money Come From?
"Eat Pray Love" the book makes clear that the author got an advance from her publisher which allowed her to take a year off to travel to Italy, India, and Bali. In the movie, this isn't stated. We're left wondering how the star is so wealthy that she can not only travel the world, but take a year off from work to do so.
The Indian Girl and Hypocrisy
Julie Roberts' character is in search of herself throughout "Eat Pray Love." She flees her seemingly nice-guy husband just because she's not feeling some nebulous sense of fulfillment. Yet, while in India she meets a young girl whose parents are forcing her to marry a boy she's never met. Julia Roberts attends the wedding and tells the girl that she sees a vision of her being happy. Huh? Why can Roberts tell the girl this, in blatant opposition to her own actions?
Julia Roberts' Lips
This may be shallow, but it was a big pet peeve of mine throughout the movie. Yes, Julia Roberts has a beautiful smile. But yes, she also has an extremely large upper lip. Like something nature never intended. I just couldn't take my eyes away from her lips: it was like the upper lip extended beyond the colored portion into her skin. Maybe "Eat Pray Love Plastic Surgery" could be the sequel?
The Baby?
In "Eat Pray Love" the book, the big issue behind Liz/Julia Roberts leaving husband #1 is that she's not ready to have a baby. This is never mentioned in the movie, leaving the Julia Roberts character looking like a bit of a meanie. She leaves her husband why? The closest thing we see to a reason is Roberts's angst when her husband expresses the desire to become a teacher. Teaching ain't exactly sweeping streets - is this an offense worth leaving over?
Cinderella Returns
"Eat Pray Love" features Liz running away from her marriage and her everyday life to "find herself." But in the end, how does she find herself? Why, coincidentally enough, with another man. Yet this man is exotic, rugged, Brazilian, and she finds him in Bali - so he must be good, right? Hmmm ... this looks a lot like the Cinderella-being-rescued-by-the-prince theme yet again. Have we really not progressed any further than this?

Post a CommentTHANK YOU! i despised both book and movie for how they ended...with the character finding fulfillment with another MAN...not that men aren't fun. but seriously..do we REALLY need another story where the girl tries to find herself and instead ends up finding mister-maybe-right-for-awhile?
Good points! I thought I would like this movie but I didn't. It bothered me that she joined a religion that she didn't even believe in. She prayed to God for answers, but once she got answers she didn't even give God a second thought.
LOVE this review! I've never read the book or seen the movie, but the previews and hype set off alarm bells, and were vaguely irritating and I didn't really know why. Now I know, without having to sit through the film, lol! (A lot of women complain about their husbands for silly reasons and then run out and find another guy who they don't really know, but somehow he's going to solve everything. Uh huh, right. When men do that, do women like it? What, do women want trophy husbands now?)
