Eating Out in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an enchanting island in the Caribbean. Surprising to some, Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. This means that citizens of the United States do not need a passport to visit the island. Puerto Rico has become a very popular destination for tourists and cruise ships. Reasons leading to the popularity among tourists include the friendliness of the locals, beautiful beaches, and delicious food.

A trip to Puerto Rico is not complete if you do not sample some of the local cuisine. Try some friend plantains as an appetizer and the delicious mofongo with your entrée. Puerto Rico has many delicious restaurants to choose from, including some American favorites like Chili's. Before you head out to a Puerto Rican restaurant, there are a few things you need to know about dining in Puerto Rico.

First of all, you should know that Puerto Ricans, like most Caribbean residents, are very laid back people. For them, meal time is a great way to socialize with friends and family. In restaurants, you will see groups gathered around tables laughing and sharing stories with one another. So, this means that they are really in no hurry to get out of the restaurant. As a result, the restaurant staff will not be rushing. They are very attentive and courteous; they just don't bend over backwards trying to do things at record breaking speeds. They will, however, bend over backwards to get the job done and keep customers happy.

When the leisurely meal is over you will most likely be asked if you would like dessert or café con leche (coffee with milk). Many people will take time to have a few cups of café con leche, which is the traditional way coffee is prepared in Puerto Rico. Usually, dessert selections will include flan. Sometimes you will find ice cream or shakes made with some of the local fruits like mangos and papayas.

When you are nearing the end of your dining experience you will notice one thing that differs from when you eat at a restaurant in the United State. The waiter or waitress will not bring your bill and set it on the table. Once you are done you will have to request the bill. Servers are not trying to be rude or lazy, they just do not want to rush you and give you ample time for socialization.
