Checks and money orders no longer allowed
What's changing with payments on eBay?
Beginning in late October 2008, checks and money orders will no longer be allowed as payment methods on eBay. All items appearing on eBay.com must be paid for using either:
- PayPal (funded by PayPal account balance, credit card, debit card, bank account, PayPal Pay Later, PayPal Buyer Credit or eBay gift certificate)
- Credit or debit card payment to a seller (through a seller's Internet merchant account)
- ProPay
- Payment upon pickup
We are also working with other electronic payment providers currently included in our Accepted Payments Policy to integrate their services into eBay checkout in 2009.

Don't worry, ebay offers us a great alternative to PayPal:ProPay! Where did ProPay come from? I wouldn't doubt that ebay owns part of ProPay.
I just looked a ProPay and it's nowhere near what we "small" sellers can afford to be profitable. First off, the basic membership comes with a $34.95 annual fee. Under this package, we can only accept VISA / MasterCard with a 3.5% + $0.35 transaction fee. Bank transfer fees are $0.35. To top it off, the monthly processing limit is $1,000.00. Premium plans lift many restrictions but cost $60-$300!! ProPay is not an alternative that most of us will use.
Ebay gives us options that cost more than PayPal, thus forcing us into using them. They don't offer us alternatives, they just pretend to give us options that we won't use. ebay is creating another monopoly and I'm betting that someone or group of people files a class action suit with a regulatory commission of some type. I'm sure the post office will be upset to find out that ebay no longer accepts postal money orders.
I used to get tons of money order payments but it has grown less and less. I still do occasionally receive requests to accept money orders. Sure, it takes longer but there are no transaction fees. ebay is trying to make it so they always get the fees.
One question arises? What do buyers, who don't own credit cards, do? Some people have had financial problems in the past and are unable to get credit cards. For some, credit cards are an addiction they try to avoid. ebay is forcing credit cards and PayPal on us all.

Post a CommentYou are allowed to offer customers the option to pay for items with a check or money order but you are not allowed to publish it in your listing description. Customers are allowed to ask you if you accept checks or money orders. It's kind of a ridiculous policy.
Why can't I offer to buyers personal check or MoneyOrder? I am an adult and should be allowed my own choices. PayPal has been a huge headache. Firts, years ago they stole our cc info and gambled $350--and never an apology! I decided to go back to PP, since you HAVE to enrol to be able to sell eBay. Sold and went to PP to get my $. They asked me to provide another CC and another address... I was stunned. Called them, this rude woman finally told me my CC was going to be credited. 15 days later, nothing! Called again yesterday. After more than 1/2 hour talk (me footing the phone bill!), I was told a check, that would take up to 2 weeks, would be sent to me. Why in the world would I want this kind of hassle? I'm cancelling my eBay account as soon as the check (minus $3 fees!) arrives and is deposited!
It needs to be done somehow because this policy is not compatible to reality. Ebay can't force either sellers or buyers to us PayPal.. or any type of payment that Ebay created.
This is not fair market pratice and it needs to crack down this behaviors. Obama's office should know and done something about it.
People do want to make money but "Greed"" is spelled out loud instead of good pratices.
Yes, it's suck. We use Ebay for along time and once suing PayPal we got a problem right away. It took time to get refund. The problem was not from us but from the seller, Ebay and PayPal. Who paid the price? The buyer like us! But we got refund after trying to explain what was going on.
There are so many sellers who do not think for themselves suck into it. There are many sellers who know what need to be done and how they can get money from a buyer after auction ended or Buy It Now option.
There are so many people who do not want to use credit cards after many time ID theft from online.
We are victims by profit making business of both Ebay na payPal. Ebay seems to be a good guy.. after greeding get into their system. Ebay suck too !!!
Paypal has mad eEbay look uglier when the mandatory was applied -- illegally -- that is what we feel.
Why USPS money order can't be used as a payment. Why manipulation is used and forced for buyer and sellers in Ebay?
Obama administra
Oh boy that sucks!
I agree Charlotte, I kept up with my stats too. New Final value fee's & PayPal killed my EBay biz...
Yep, the change in payment methods is outrageous. Ive been selling on eBay for 2 years - successfully, I might add. After the latest change, I opened my own store. I still sell on eBay, but the goal is to migrate as much as I can. eBay has screwed buyers and sellers alike with some of their new changes. The regulation just keeps getting worse. Great piece.
eBay, aka, Paypal have become horror stories all over the internet, read on for yourselves!!! People are pissed off and they will take action, as I say, with every action, there is a reaction, that is comming! I put together the two eBay and Paypal and came up with the word, eBayPay, aka, ebay gets paid, sellers get screwed, buyers get screwed too ( domono effect ), people get pissed, it will come back around to eBay and Paypal, you will see !!!
Yeah, e-bay was never really profitable when I sold stuff, but buying right now one can nab some good prices on Blu-ray movies
This is too bad. If they continue to spit in the faces of of their users, they will eventually go under. I could see some kind of organized protest going down at some point.
