eBay Your Way Out of Christmas Debt

Jeff Rogers
Maybe you've started to receive those credit card bills stating how much money you spent while buying presents for your family and friends during the past Christmas season. Just remember, Christmas is a time for giving, and receiving. This year you can pay off your credit card splurges by purging yourself of all the stuff you have laying around your house or in your garage. Teenagers are excluded.

I'm talking about getting rid of the stuff you don't use or need, something that had a sentimental value long ago may have lost its luster and it may have more value to someone else. And if you took an inventory of everything you don't use anymore or have never used I think you would be surprised at what you could live without. Plus, when you get something new for Christmas the old items that were replaced loose their value and eventually you quit using them and toss them anyway.

I'm just suggesting that getting rid of stuff and making a small profit while doing it will have benefits for everyone. eBay is currently the best electronic way to buy and sell your unwanted things. You could have a garage sale, but obtaining a one day sale permit along with setting up, and pricing might just seem like too much work. Also, if you live in a colder climate it may be until Spring or Summer before you can even get started and the time is now to start selling and making money on things you don't use so you can pay off your credit card balances.

If you have ever shopped on eBay then you know you can find just about any item no matter what it is, even the most obscure things in the world are listed with this on-line auction site. So, don't think that someone wouldn't want a spaghetti measurer/stirrer, yes, I have one, but it's not for sale. Also, cleaning your house or garage of those unused items gives you a powerful feeling that you're getting organized and that may be one of your goals for this year. You may be able to cancel that payment each month for the unused storage facility. Think about that for a moment. Furthermore, passing it on to someone else just keeps it going. You've probably heard the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure". Why not find out if it's true.

Chances are you've seen the commercials for eBay, they are done in a light way that shows how much fun it is to bid on something and then win the final bid, this goes along with our society and they emphasize the victory of winning something. The whole idea behind eBay is to level the playing field with an opening bid, where it goes from there is anyone's guess. Why not participate and help someone feel like they've won something too. eBay's slogan is "What ever it is, you can get it on eBay, and shop victoriously!"

If you have a web camera or just a digital camera then it's very easy to take a picture of the item(s) you want to sell. This gives the buyer a chance to view the item and to make a bid. If you don't have those types of cameras or just don't want the hassle of keeping track of selling your stuff then check your local phone directory and you might find an eBay store near you. These types of stores allow you take your items to them; they take the pictures and sometimes even house the merchandise. When it sells they will alert you via e-mail and since e-bay's creation they created a safe way to buy items over the internet, it's called Pay Pal. Setting up a Pay Pal account is free and easy, monies from the sale of your eBay items will be deposited into your account.

So, get organized, gather up the things that are collecting dust, shine them up and start making money. I think you will be surprised at how much fun it can be. You will need to check their website for items that you cannot sell such as teacher's edition textbooks and other copyrighted material. Learn to enjoy the commerce side of Christmas for yourself and open the auction bidding for your own after-Christmas sale today.

I often joke that you could list a bucket of dirty rocks on eBay and someone would bid on it ☺

eBay works better for the buyers now than the sellers, since they raised the fees...

There are so many cool things on eBay. I found a Star Wars item that was rare that made the perfect gift for my nephew for Christmas a few years ago. I use it for other gift giving holidays, too.

I have found some really great things on eBay that I never thought I'd be able to find anywhere. Actually I did some selling, too, but stopped when fees started getting a little too out of hand.

Great article and it made me wonder what fun things I can find there again so I'll be looking later. :-)
