Ebenezers Coffeehouse in NE Washington DC
For Great Coffee and a Good Cause on Capitol Hill in Washington DC
History of Ebenezers Coffeehouse
How did Ebenezers Coffeehouse get its start? It's a long story that has strong connections to Union Station, a major transportation hub for the nation's capital. In 1908, Washington resident Ernestine Reuter was granted a permit by the city to build a one-level diner at 201 F Street NE. This little restaurant and dining establishment originally served "butter and eggs" to the Union Station travel set before food service was available on the trains that ran night and day through this busy transportation center. The diner was one of several eateries set up in those days to feed weary passengers before they boarded their trains for parts unknown.
In 2002, the National Community Church bought the very same property and had it rezoned from residential to commercial use. Doors opened for business in 2006. The rest, as they say, is history and it's certainly good news for the coffee loving public.
Great Coffee (and More) For a Cause
Ebenezers does more than pour coffee. This Capitol Hill institution features live music, dance lessons and poetry nights, in addition to great coffee and light fare. Ebenezer's is a gathering place for workers, members of the church community, students, travelers and more. It's unique in that it goes beyond your typical coffee shop and lends itself to poetry and the visual and performing arts. It's special to Washington DC for its roots as a diner serving wayward travelers. Today, you might say, Ebenezer Coffeehouse remains faithful to these roots as they serve up delicious java with a community spirit that's second to none. Service is warm and pleasant. Seating's available for solo diners and groups. A room downstairs is sufficient for any group gathering and more.
Upcoming Events at Ebenezer's Coffeehouse
Ebenezers Coffeehouse sponsors all kinds of cool events and functions, not just coffee house poetry readings. Upcoming happenings include Delta Blues' artist Jonny Grave's CD Release Show (January 7, 2011 @ 8pm) and Brooklyn's award winning acoustic band Breaking Laces (January 13, 2011 @ 7:30 pm.)
