Will E-books Replace the Paperback?

Ariana R. Cherry-Shearer
With new technology such as the Kindle and other media players, E-books are beginning to hit the market for readers on the move. While print editions are still important, as many still want the feeling of having a book in their hands as they read, E-book publishing presents a new market to authors and another way to sell their written material.

For writers who want to get a start in publishing their books as E-books, the Internet does offer software that allows them to self publish an E-book from the comfort of their computers. There are already websites such as Lulu.com and Cafe Press that offer authors a way to self publish their own books in print. Although, if authors want to reach the new generation of E-book readers, it could be important to publish in E-book form along with their print editions.

Some E-books are printed into PDF files which can be read in an Adobe Acrobat Reader programs. Many E-book readers also read PDF files. For authors on a budget or are self publishing, converting their programs into a pdf file can be the cheaper route to take. One easy tool that is available online, FREE PDF Converter, allows you to convert Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images and other kinds of files into PDF files without having to download anything. Simply upload your file that you would like to convert, and the website does it for you.

Another program, Primo PDF, converts over three hundred different file types into PDF form. The PDF files can then be used for E-books, office documents, online viewing or used for prepress. Systems that have Windows 2000, Vista, XP and 7 can use the Primo PDF program. The home version is free for download and the professional program offers a 14 day trial. After the 14 day trial, the professional program is $99.

The Cute PDF Writer, allows users to create PDF files for free and it doesn't come with any extra pop up ads or watermarks. Those who want to use it for business or personal use can it at their own ease with no extra costs. Requirements to use the Cute PDF writer include Windows Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista/7.

So it isn't necessary to spend a lot of money to turn your Word documents into PDF files for Ebook publishing when the Internet offers so many online tools and free software for easy conversion. Authors who self publish can have the opportunity to print on demand and create their own E-books as well.

As the popularity of E-books grow, the question still arises though-Will E-books replace the books in print? For now, as technology continues to progress, only time will tell. Many of us "old timers" who still love the feel of the pages and the ability to hold the stories in our hand, may fight to keep the book on the shelves. Until then, authors have the ability to market their books to a variety of markets that include both print and E-books while still doing it cost effectively. Although, if we still want to keep books selling and printing on the shelves, it is up to us to keep the market going by supporting the authors we know and love.
