Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth Did Not Excite Me

This new self-help book has been heavily promoted by Oprah Winfrey, so I figured I had to check it out. She preaches poetically about the benefits of reading this book, and raves about its practical advice. With Oprah behind it, how can a book fail me?

Well, I have to admit that I just can't get into this book. I can't put my finger on it, but some kind of barrier exists between the tenets of this book and my brain. Either I can't wrap my mind around what author Eckhart Tolle is telling me, or I just don't want to. Perhaps I am the very person who needs to read this book. But, try as I might, I can't get anything out of it. Usually I lose myself in a book, surfacing only when required. Now, I find myself looking for an excuse not to pick up the book.

Mr. Tolle believes that a person's being is separate from their ego, but that most people find their worth in their ego instead of their being. He teaches that if people could get in touch with their "inner being" they could let go of their "ego" and find true happiness. (His suggestion for finding your inner being? He tells the reader to clear your mind of any thoughts, and feel your "inner being" in your hand. Don't think about it, because your mind will tell you there is no inner being in your hand. Just experience the inner being of your hand. After you can accomplish this, you should move on to feeling your inner being in the rest of your body. I just couldn't do it. Maybe my mind has too much control over my body.) His book purports to tell you how to let go of your ego. Maybe I just don't want to let go of my ego, or maybe I just can't get in touch with my inner being. Whichever it is, I guess my life's purpose is destined to stay concealed within me.

I must admit that I am a bit obsessed with self-help books, especially books that claim to help you find your true path in life. As a wife and mother, I am always searching for that one piece of advice that will better point my life in the truest direction. This book did not offer up even one tiny morsel of advice that I found useful or interesting. I'm glad I took the book out of the library instead of buying it.

I really wanted to like this book. I am disappointed that I didn't like it. Maybe it's just a sign of Oprah's worldly influence that I wanted to like it to begin with! I wanted to be able to find something useful in it. After all, the subtitle is "Awakening to Your Life's Purpose". I had trouble just staying awake while reading this book!

spirituality is. Reading books, doing meditation, burning insence, and all the outward spiritual things of the ego only seek to keep you from finding your true self. The IDEA of spirituality is a huge obsticle.. give all that up and slow your life down to this single moment where all things are possible, we each have this ability and when developed properly we can replace the concept of spirituality that exists in the mind with actually cultivating the most amazingly loving and compassionate things for the benefit of ourselves and all others right now in this very moment. Don't seek a concept, instead be the miracle that you seek :)

i read your post, it sounds like you might consider taking a look at your own concept of spirituality and what you believe true spirituality is. do you feel its the search that is spirituality or do you feel it is in the application where you find your true self? Eckhart is self realized and self realized people are fully aware that life happens in this moment always, there is no search needed because we are already the very things we are searching for. i know before i became self realized Eckharts books didn't make all that much sense to me, but after the awakening, they fully make sense, and the unfortunate thing is what we really are can't possibly be explained, it can only be experienced or pointed to which eckhart does a great job attempting to do. The sad thing is when you fully stuck in the ego experience, you simply don't have the awareness to experience the NOW or the present moment fully. Another piece of advice would be to break down the concept of what you think spiritualit
