Eclipse® 1175e Elliptical Trainers Recalled

Fall Hazard

Janice Villa
According to a press release today, December 11th, from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a voluntary recall has been made for the Eclipse® 1175e Elliptical Trainer by Fitness Quest Inc.

Approximately 23,000 units of these elliptical trainers, manufactured in China and distributed by Fitness Quest Inc. of Canton, Ohio, have been recalled because of a possible fall hazard. The reason for the recall is that the cranks that connect the foot platforms to the rear wheel of the machine can break during exercise. This could pose a fall hazard to consumers.

At this time there have been approximately 190 reported incidents of the cranks breaking. There have been no reported injuries.

The recall is for the Eclipse® 1175e elliptical trainer. An elliptical trainer is a cardiovascular exercise machine. These type of machines have two foot platforms attached to a wheel at the rear of the machine. The recalled elliptical trainer machine has "1175e" stamped on an oval decal located on the side of the wheel housing.

This piece of exercise equipment was sold at Sports Authority, Modell, Dunhams, JC Penney stores and other retailers nationwide from September 2006 to October 2007. Each elliptical trainer machine was sold for between $290 and $450.

If you have this piece of exercise equipment you are asked to immediately stop using it. You have the option of doing two things, either contact Quest for a free replacement elliptical machine or ask for a credit towards the purchase of another Fitness Quest exercise machine.

For further information you should contact Fitness Quest at their toll free number at: (800) 321-9236 between 8:30 am and 8 pm ET Monday through Friday. You can also log on to their web site at: http://www.fitnessquest.com.

Some more info for anyone considering buying one of these: The 1175e was replaced with the 1100 HR/A. I got my replacement in February 2008 and the same pedal broke off in October 2008. Same noisy operation and flimsy materials.

I don't want to excercise anyway, one more good reason not too!

I had one of these break on me while I was on it. I was sooooo angry at the time.

Luckily, I didn't dump it. It's been sitting in my utility room for months. Then I saw this recall, called the company for the recall; sent back the pedal they wanted me to send (verification I guess). I'm waiting for them to tell me when I'll get my replacement (a different elliptical that's had all good reviews).

    What a pain!

Will this recall stuff never end? When will manufacturers start paying attention to safety? Great reporting!
