To Make Your Upcycled Scarf You Will Need:
Old Skirt or Jeans
Scissors
Tape Measure
Sewing Machine
To get started you need to cut open your skirt or pants to get the largest square inches of fabric possible. It is a good idea to cut along seams when possible to do this. For pants I recommend cutting along the inside seam of each pant leg. For a skirt cut along one side seam and lay the skirt out flat.
Next, cut out your strips of fabric. This will vary on the available fabric you have. Basically you are trying to get two pieces of fabric that are 5 inches wide and 72 inches long.
This can be accomplished even if you do not have a 72 inch length of fabric. You may end up cutting 4 pieces that are 5 inches wide and 36.5 inches long for example.
If you had to cut 2 pieces 36 inches long go ahead and sew two pieces together to make one piece that is 72 inches long. You will need to use a ½ inch seam allowance.
Now that you have 2 piece of fabric 5 inches wide and 72 inches long you want to lay one piece pattern side up on your work surface. Top this off with the other piece pattern side down.
Pin around the scarf leaving one end open. Later you will use this open end to turn your scarf right side out. Sew around the scarf using a ½ inch seam allowance.
Turn the scarf right side out. Tuck the open ends in and iron them flat. Top stitch around the entire edge of the scarf. This is a chance to add some color and design while closing the opening you left to turn the scarf inside out.
Tips: Try recycling old vintage pants made from funky fabrics. This is a great way to create one of a kind upcycled scarves.
You can also screen print images on the scarves. Look online for free clip art of vintage typewriters, alphabet letters, and more to get that funky retro look.
Vintage buttons make a fun detail when sewn onto the end of the scarf as well. Be sure to use fun colored threads so all the details really pop.
