Eco-Friendly Insect Control

Homemade Bug Repellents

Insects are pesky and can become incredibly irritating to even the most calm and collected of people. That being said, there are thousands upon thousands of insecticides, pesticides and other chemical-based products that are used to deter or kill off pesky insects. Those of us looking to be a little more green in our homes (or to our environment) may be a little bit hesitant to use these products (and for good reason: toxic chemicals around our friends and families? No thanks.) Fortunately, there are several items found in the common kitchen or at your local supermarket that can be used to combat some commonly found pests.

Mosquitos

There are several natural oils that can be used to deter mosquitos (and their bites.) Though you may not have them in your kitchen currently, you can find most of them at your local supermarket. Oils that are naturally offensive to mosquitos include citronella oil, lemon eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil and caster oil. Simply mix 20 to 30 drops of your chosen oil with two tablespoons of a carrier oil. Carrier oils include olive oil, sunflower oil and other cooking oils, though you can also use witch hazel or vodka. Spray the mixture onto clothing or skin as needed. You can store the extra mixture in a non-transparent bottle, but be sure to store in room temperature and keep it out of heat or sunlight.

Houseflies

Houseflies are downright annoying. Fortunately, this recipe is much easier than the above-mentioned and only includes one ingredient. Simply take a paper plate and smear a thick layer of molasses onto the plate. Leave the plate on your counter for a few hours and the flies will be attracted quickly to the sweet, sticky molasses. (Tip: smudge a little around the edges of the plate to prevent the smart ones from escaping as they only land on the edge of the plate.)

Fruit Flies

Fruit flies are the bane of any fresh-fruit lover. Once there's one, there's a ton and they seem to get into your face like no other insect (they've been known to fly into mouths of those who are eating.) Fortunately, you can get rid of fruit flies quickly and easily without having to chase them around with a fly swatter or a vacuum (I plead the fifth, neither option works too well, either.)

Simply set out a bowl or cup of vinegar-apple cider vinegar works best-and cover it with wax paper. Secure the wax paper in place with a rubber band or tape. Poke a few holes into the top of the wax paper that are large enough for the fruit flies to get through. Once they're in, the flies will be unable to get back out.
