Eco-Friendly Products: What Exactly is Plantable Paper?

Lauren Romano
Plantable paper is becoming increasingly popular, even during occasions such as weddings and funerals. It is exactly what it sounds like. Plantable paper is paper that, after it has served its purpose, can be planted and various flowers can grow from it. With the growing popularity, you can find many forms of plantable paper.

One of the reasons for the increasing demand of plantable paper is that people understand the environmental impact that a constant use of paper has. There is wrapping paper, stationery, envelopes, birth and wedding announcements and various other forms of paper that just end up getting thrown into recycling or in the trash. After the paper items are produced, the damage has been done because much of the paper had to come from cut down trees. Plantable seed paper is paper that is handmade with the seeds of flowers actually embedded into the paper. It has an elegant and organic touch. After the item has been used, you place the plantable paper item under soil, water it, and let the sun shine on it. Usually within a week to two it will start to sprout. Instructions on how to care for the seeds are usually included with each product.

If you are planning to order plantable paper, it is advised that you get the text you would like on the paper to be done through the site. Plantable paper may be too heavy and bulky for some at home printers to take, so before you make your purchase it is important to make sure it is safe for your printer at home. Many sites allow you to input text and customize the font and style right from their website form. Considering how elaborate plantable paper is and the amount of work that goes into making it, the prices can be a bit expensive. Before making the official purchase, you may want to contact the site with any questions that you have or if you want a price quote.

Where can you buy plantable paper?

There are several sites now offering plantable paper in a number of forms. Botanicalpaperworks.com carries absolutely every type of paper product you can think of that is made of plantable paper. They carry calendars, invitations, journals, postcards and everything in between. They even have plantable Easter crosses that sprout wheat grass after it is planted. Each cross is $1.95, but there is a minimum order of twenty-five. Prices vary depending on the item you purchase and how many of each.

Despite the expense of plantable seed paper, you may consider it to be worth it. Any item you send out, even if it is an invitation, can in itself be considered a gift. It is a nice way to give your loved ones a small, eco-friendly gift and give the earth a present as well.
