Eco-Friendly Summer Activities for the Kids

Staying green over the summer may seem difficult. However, it is easier than you think! Whether you are trying to entertain your children, grandchildren, or the kids down the street that you may be babysitting this summer, here are several eco-friendly activities they may enjoy.

Eco-Friendly Summer Activity for the Kids #1: A Garage Sale

Gather all the items you don't use or need anymore and recycle them by having a garage sale. We all have "junk" lying around the house that may be treasures to another. Make it fun and exciting by providing prizes for the one who provides the most items to give away or sells the most. Kids will have the chance to hone their math skills with money counting and giving change back during the sale. It is an activity that will get the whole family or neighborhood involved.

Eco-Friendly Summer Activity for the Kids #2: Create a Fort Outside

Use patio chairs, rope, and a sheet to create a fun escape outside with your kids. Your kids can use their imaginations while you save energy. This will help to reduce the energy used inside your house for the day because lights, televisions, and other electronics won't be in demand while the kids are outside.

Eco-Friendly Summer Activity for the Kids #3: Grow a Plant

Get together to plant vegetables, fruit, or other plants that can ultimately be used in the kitchen. By showing your children how to plant, they will get to enjoy being outside while doing something to help the environment. In return, your child will learn the importance of keeping the world green, using homegrown food, and family bonding.

Eco-Friendly Summer Activity for the Kids #4: Create a Recycling Center

Using reused baskets, you can create a home recycling center. Show your children just how easy it can be to recycle by separating cans, plastics, glass and more. Creating a home recycling center is an easy activity that can create a huge impact on the way your children sort trash.

Eco-Friendly Summer Activity for the Kids #5: Throw a Potluck

With summer holidays coming up, a potluck would be a blast. Have friends or family bring dishes that were preferably made without a grill, as a way to unite everyone for an eco-friendly cause. Don't forget to bring your own plates and cups to reduce waste. You may also bring recycling bins to separate cans, plastic, and waste. Another way to keep with the green theme is to have everyone also bring a container to take home any leftovers as a way to reduce waste.

If these are all green, then my childhood was green before anyone knew what that meant. :) Blanket forts are the best!
