Avoid Chemicals
If you're a homeowner, you know the jealously that occurs when you drive by someone's house and their lawn looks like a golf course. What many people don't realize is that these beautiful lawns require a lot of chemicals, even ones that are extremely toxic and harmful to the environment. The truth is that these chemicals aren't necessary at all. Instead of using chemical-packed fertilizers, weed-killers, and more, use manual methods and organic fertilizers. Pulling weeds by hand can be a great work out (you actually burn a lot of calories) and is a very green alternative too.
Plant Flowers and Vegetables
A great way to go green is to plant flowers and vegetables in a garden in your backyard. Flowers attract helpful insects, such as bees, and home-grown vegetables easily beat buying them from the store, even buying local. By gardening you can also include the whole family too and give everyone tasks to do. So not only is planting your own flowers and vegetables green and good for the environment (especially if you use natural and organic methods), but it can also be fun.
Go For Durability
Many of us with decent-sized backyards often purchase patio or lawn furniture to use when they're relaxing outside. However, many people make the mistake of buying cheap furniture that gets destroyed in bad weather. Instead of buying inexpensive and bad quality furniture, spend the extra few bucks and buy durable lawn and patio furniture. This can include hammocks, lawn chairs, picnic tables, swings, and more.
Cook Outdoors
Practically everybody loves a good BBQ. But something else that most people don't realize is that making food outdoors in your backyard is a green alternative to cooking indoors, especially during the summer. If you cook on the stove or oven, you're creating excess heat, which makes your house warmer and your air conditioning run harder. So instead of using more energy when it comes to running the AC, try cooking outdoors in your backyard using a grill. You'll be surprised with the delicious and green results.
Go Solar
As a final tip, a great way to light up your backyard is by installing and using solar powered outdoor lighting. While these lights won't be blindingly bright, they'll create a nice atmosphere and still light the way even into the night hours. Solar powered lights are surprisingly affordable and come in a variety of different styles and colors that will match your backyard perfect.
